I'm posting this here because there doesn't seem to be much about these little trucks in the Daihatsu pages.

So, any views? Any experiences? I'm just thinking idly about a replacement for my daily run-around Kangoo, and thinking that 4wd would be good. I was quite impressed with the Top Gear Fox Hunt; thought it would have been even better with a decent driver!

a naughbour of mine has one, looks quite good for a soft roader and he's never had any issues with it in 2 years.

Belive the newer ones (as on top gear) are based on the 'old' shape RAV4 (200-2005) running gear. Which isnt a bad thing they were extremely relaible.

My Dad has a 1999 Terios+. Great little car. The older ones are a bit more capable off road than the new ones for several reasons:

It is permanent 4x4 with an electronic centre diff lock
The old 1.3 engine is far better than the new 1.3 which is taken from the Toyota Yaris. The old engine has a lot more low down torque (dad quite often cruises in 5th gear at 25mph without any shuddering)
The alloy wheels are much chunkier and much more solid meaning they can take a bit more of a beating.

As for the Terios in general it has its advantages and disadvantages:
Dad tows a small caravan with it, although its not the best tow car due to being so small and light it does do well on a muddy track or field, even with the caravan on the back.
Being so small it is incredibly nippy around town and the high driving position makes it even better.
Its very stable considering its narrow track and being quite tall.
Cheap to run (very economical)
Cheap to insure
Easy and cheap to maintain

Down sides are:
It is quite small inside, though the boot is large enough it is a little cramped in the driver and passenger seats, it is quite narrow. I am 5'11" and find I bash my knees sometimes on the centre console and door. It has enough adjustment of the seats and steering wheel to get relatively comfortable for long distance driving but if you are over 6ft I dont think youll find it comfortable.
You would only get 2 adults in the back (3 children would be ok though) and depending on the leg length of the driver and front passenger leg room in the back might be limited.
Ride can be a little harsh but not too bad.

All in all I think its a pretty good softroader but youd have to try it out to see if you fit. They are pretty cheap now and its worth looking out for the + versions as they have the toys on them like A/C. Leccy windows, sunroof and roof bars. I wouldnt bother with the newer models, they have gone a little too soft and arent worth the extra £.

HTH Smile

:EDIT: Not I dont work for a motoring magazine..................... but maybe I should?................................ Wonder if they need a new writer for Top Gear Mag?............................... or Difflock mag?! Very Happy

i used to work on these and from a mechanics point of view they would only come in for service and the brakes to be fair. As a rule they were very very reliable, as to off road i have no idea what they are like. the only comments customers used to make were that they were heavy on fuel.

Really? My dads is really economical? It uses more that your average 1.3 hatch but you would expect that as its 4x4.

My mum bought a 55 plate Sport (old shape) brand new an loved it, a year later she traded it in against the new shape, 56 plate SX and thinks its the best thing since sliced bread. She has had it nearly 2 years now, never had a single issue with it. Its very good on fuel, better than the 1.3 old model. The new model is a 1.5, not a 1.3, and is based on the Rav4. We havent convinced her to let us take it shooting yet so cant say what its like off road but having driven it around town I'm impressed.
All in all they are very good, cheap soft roaders. I know for sure my mum will not consider anything else!

Paul

Have a look on "you tube" the things will go a lot further than you think Exclamation I must admit I would quite like one to run around in, and it would probably give a few 4x4's a suprise if fitted with some A/T's Laughing and I can pick one up for less than they want to fit LPG to my Grand Surprised and if my old Fourtrak is anything to go by (and yes I know its compleatly different) it will never go wrong, Laughing

terios is more of a 4wd road car, independent front suspension and no low range
jimny is a proper little offroader, solid front & rear axle, coils all round and high / low range tbox
just stick some mud tyres on a jimny and you're sorted Smile
