Hi. I have as well as liking the fast Jimny a good bit of interest in classic tractors and use an old massey on the farm. It's fun. Thing is I am wondering if something in the shape of a backhoe loader couldn't be included into the enterprise. My problem is that beyond being made by jcb and mostly being yellow, I wouldn't know what is a better year for reliability versus functionality or indeed which size of machine would be appropriate for my decidedly hobby use. Shifting the odd pallet, putting the odd drainage ditch in, that sort of thing, though obviously once I get one I will find a thousand jobs I couldn't do without it but that's normal with any new to you piece of technology. The point is it would be a toy to be played with much more than a tool to go contracting with. What machines should I be looking at?

All these old machines usually suffer the same problem, the hydraulics wear. The pumps start to slip and the valves and cylinders leak. And usually all of that is internal so you can't see it. Also they seem to work fine when they are cold and lose it as the oil gets hot so if you test drive one make sure you start cold and get it warm.
The size depends on what you want to do. Find out what the front can lift in weight as that will tell you what pallet you can lift / car / engine etc. They usually spec this weight at a certain distance forwards so if your planning on lifting big things like cars it won't actually lift what it says it will so you need to go bigger.
For the back it's reach as much as anything, if its hard ground you can do a smaller dig or use a smaller bucket.
Make wise I wouldn't like to say. There are a lot of very old Fords and Case around here that still seem to be moving.

Interesting. Thank you. Mostly it would be a summer machine and I would say that cleaning out a ditch or finding land drains could be the limit of the actual digging. I have been out with a friend fencing with one and it's certainly a lot easier to push a stake in with the back arm than with a sledge hammer. I definitely won't be picking up cars with it but maybe packing gateways with road planings so a bit of bulk aggregate. Like I said, playing not working. . Thanks for the advice.

Augers are good for fencing... until you take out the power to the village pub and they have to stop serving sunday dinners and turn all the customers away... :s

To be fair the plans from the electric board showed the cable running up the right of the field so much care was taken there, it turns out they re-laid it up the left of the field and didn't bother updating the plans.

If you want something classic, you could look in the back of a magazine called Classic Tractor and see what is in the ads, its the one I get.
