A neighbour has recently got a second hand trailer. I for my sins have been chosen to recommission it, brakes, electrical, bearings, floor that kinda thing. The coupling and hubs are knott which are easily accessible for spares and the rest can be generic. Thing is that I am quite curious about what make it is. It's a galvanised folded metal construction in 2mm steel. The frame is a 5mm 50x75 angle iron with the A frame welded and then the rest just bolted together with m12 machine screws. It's very robust especially for a 6x4 but it is not a plant trailer it's more general purpose than that. I have been looking at the usual suspects like Bateson and ifor williams and it's not one of their offerings even historically. Who else made such things in say the last 20 years that I might compare it against?

Definitely not a halfords one its way way too well built for that.

Indespension possible, but I would have expected to have indespension suspension and hardware not knott. It not being mine I am not at liberty to share a picture .

Is there no plate? Should be a weight plate really with something on it.

Erde / daxara / maypole are big in little trailers but there are smaller companies who probably haven't heard of the internet yet, I have a paul townend which is all welded and a bolted one but can't for the life of me think of the make, or it could even be home brewed? There's also brenderup and Anssems too. Can't think of any more off the top of my head...

I think it is a bit on the old side to have needed a manufacturer plate because they've only been required in the last few years. It could easily be from the 90s looking at the state of the galvanising. It is also too factory looking for a home brew, everything lines up properly for a start. I had wondered if it were a wessex but there's a few key differences that make me think not.

Beware / Take care!
Police Orifeces / DVSA when doing checks at Recycle Centre / Car Boot sale / Motoring Events are not that nice sometimes with Trailers without Plates / VIN /Weights / Manufacturer details if the are Professional builds and might be knicked with no way of checking.

Obviously just an Internet Myth, until you are stopped with such a trailer.

So get a receipt, with the details of where you get trailers, the vendors contact details etc, and have that in your vehicle.
To be sure to be sure.

That is part of the curiosity on my behalf, if I can identify it's makers then I can potentially tap them up for a replacement tag assuming the owner wants me to and is willing to provide proof of purchase etc. The coupling has weights and such on it, so it's not completely bereft of information and to look at it it is obviously not a new trailer. But I will mention it to the owner.

So I have been doing some more research and it seems that sub 3500kg braked trailers only started to be obliged to have a data plate after the introduction of type approval in 2012. Prior to this plates were seemingly optional. Further to this an existing trailer that predates approval must undergo testing if it is significantly altered. Not a problem for me as I have only recommissioned my neighbours, could be a issue for turning a Sankey cargo into a camper expedition support?

A jimny can tow 1,300 braked.
Good enough.

Un-braked 350kg.
Not very much.

The unbraked tow limit is half the kerb weight of the car as set out in the construction and use regs as amended. The owners manual states that the braked limit is something like 450kg and the unbraked is 350kg unless local regulations differ which they do in the UK. This is not surprising given that the owners manual is an English translation of the global version it having sections for Arabic markets in there too. So in order to be sold in this country it has to meet our regulations which means that despite what the hand book says it's the law that counts. When I have contacted suzuki uk to get clarification they have either blindly repeated the owners manual or more recently bounced me between legal and technical neither being inclined to commit in either direction, at which point in time, go with the legislation.

I just go by the Plate on the Vehicle with the Weights on in because that is what the DVSA Employee goes by at a roadside check.

There are really no Grey Areas other than if there is no plate on the Vehicle.

Cheers. Just been looking and they seem to be more of the lighter erde and daxra types, recycling centre types not builders types. Cheers, I will keep looking. As an aside the trailer is now with its owner and they're happy with it as it stands, any further information about it is purely for my academic interest.
