HELP !
Okay so heres the issue.
Last MOT the garage had issues trying to get our Jimny (G13bb) through the emissions, they ended up running it as hot as possible and it just scraped though. Now not to be picky here on the garage as they helped us out, but, we didn’t receive a print out. So let’s assume that they were at the limit. Now adding a bit more of an issue, the inlet manifold is caked in old oil (this could be the issue with the emission’s but unsure for certain) and the engine has a habit of suddenly dying but then going again the moment you knock the throttle pedal.

So what have we done?

We have fitted several cam sensors to reduce the issues of the odd throttle problem but I just cannot seriously see after 5 cam sensors that its this. So thinking about the throttle position sensor.
Then theres the two big issues…
1: terrible MPG… as in averaging about 24 (worse than my TD5 110 !)
2: a 0-60 time of ……24 seconds… no that’s not a miss type !

So I have a spare manifold with throttle body (I also have a 45mm throttle body ready to fit to replace the OEM one) so cleaning it out and fitting a new(ish) one is not an issue.

So heres the question
What is the best option
a) Chase the issue to solve all the problems. (offer advice on what to do please)
b) Fit a new engine
c) Fit a G16BB engine
All help appreciated !!

Mike

First off i would be giving it an Italian tune up. Aka a good long blast on some twisties. I would also do that on a couple of tanks of super unleaded, get everything nice and warm and a clean innerds with the super.

Just a small point.
My 2003 1,328 cc Automatic 16 valve Jimny has never got more than 24 mpg
(4.546 litres)
over the 58,000 miles it has done from new on standard size tyre or larger.

That is why the VED is so high with the high emission figures.

Oddly my 1999 1,298cc 8 valve is almost half the VED
& it never gets 20 miles to a gallon,
but then it has a newer 1,328 CC Auto than the 2003 Jimny
and axles / gearing from a manual Jimny.
(it can not get to 60 mph unless falling off a cliff.)

2003 one through the MOT again in December,
same advisory, Engine Management light on and rear brake pipe corrosion.
1999 one due the test end of February.

I have ran seafoam through it twice to clean the insides a little but there seemed to be very little difference. I did a head gasket a while ago and spent time cleaning out the combustion chambers to ensure that they where as clean as I could get them (acetone to brreak down the carbon deposits on the crowns) I also checked the valve seals too and they seemed fine (its a case of whilst your there you might as well) and did a compression test (all where about 175 to 185.)

I took it out today to give it a good blast (as in got to 50 in 3rd which was something like 5000rpm) and it seems a little better (or am I getting use to it?)

Our Jimny is just about fully stock except running 205 tyres.

What sort of MPG do others get ?

Putting all this aside its a really reliable vehicle so would just like to improve the few niggling issues

Not a real comparison as mine is a much newer m13a vvt but being gentle gets 42 and on average is about 36 on standard road tyres and gearing.

I've seen a few with 195 tyre's on..

just what would be the complicatons in changing to an M13A from a G13BB? would it really be worth the hassle? (guessing loom, ECU to get started)

still interested in knowing what people are getting, I suspect that suzuki plucked MPG figures from thin air... or a rolling road

talking of rolling roads, we have one nearish so I intend to get ours down there, it should be okay as the dyno is capable of 2400hp....might be close (hahahahah)

It is physically possible to swap to m13a from a g13b but it is not a practical swap, there's no commonality between the two. It's like swapping the 1.3 4 cylinder for say the 2.7 v6, yes it can and has been done but it's a lot of work. The better swap is for the g16b out of the liana that is essentially a like for like replacement just with more power.

http://skoda.co.uk/pages/fuel-consumption-statement.aspx

All EU Testing for Type Approval was done just for comparison
on a rolling road inside a temperature controlled building to an unrealistic programme.
Why all new Type Approved after September 2016 are going to have Real World Testing, still not at revenue weight though.
So the New Jimny will be interesting just what it shows as getting then does get in the way of MPG.
