Hi

I've recently come back to defender ownership and bought a 2008 TDCI 90.

I'm very surprised to find the car has not come with any Immobiliser fobs and the car starts with just a key. There is no flashing light on the dash at any point.

AFAIK all cars made for the uk market since 1996 should have a factory fitted immobiliser, so can any body shed any light why my car no longer has one ?

Many thanks[/b]

Welcome to the forum.

Only previous owners can answer that and why removed since yes it should have had one from the factory.
So you need to see how it was disabled.

As it is you had best fet the best security fitted you can now,
alarm, a hidden cut off switch, and visible deterrents like a chain from steering wheel to pedals, or a very visible lock on the Hand Brake lever.

Then they will be dragging it or lifting it onto the flat bed.

Hi and thanks for the welcome.

Today I purchased a disklock for the steering wheel and I've booked the 90 in for an after market alarm and immobiliser with a specialist this week, and I will probably buy a pedal lock as well before I'm done.

Then hopefully I will be able to sleep a little better knowing my pride and joy is more secure

As above the owner/ex owners must have electronically removed it for some reason, but I don't know why, but the question is why? if that makes sense, know someone who has just bought a tdci 90 that came with two sets of keys, with immobilishers built in, that is having a tracker fitted.

Does it have the light still in the dash that doesn't work or is it just not there?

Hi

There is no red light flashing in the dash at any point, I don’t know if it’s not fitted or just not working.

Any how the defender has been at an alarm specialist for the last 2 days having a Clifford alarm, immobiliser and central locking fitted. By all accounts they have had most of the dash out and carnt find any exsisting immobiliser fobs hidden near the ignition which would have explained why the car would start with just the key. It looks more like the factory fitted immobiliser has been removed which in my opinion is a bonkers thing to do.

I collect the car at some point tomorrow and the lack of security will be a thing of the past.

I did a bit of digging. Apparently (says my friend) that the solder on some of the older factory fitted immobilisers connections had a tendency to go brittle with age and heat from the heater - the vibrations then cause them to snap.

This stops the immobiliser from working (ie no ignition/or fuel pump cuts out) so the cheapest and simple option is to remove it or bypass it.

It's a thought but removing it does seem excessive.

Are you not reading about the old immobiliser/spider combo? Mid 1990's on over? Having said that, I've no idea about security features on newer models, so might be the same.
As has been said, the removal/damaging of the original sounds suspicious. ie could be a stolen vehicle. I think that's what others are thinking Question Me anorl Shocked

A friend of mine mentioned he saw a TDCI 90 without immobilizer fob as well. We're wondering the reason of removing it.
