1973 SIII 2.25p which has sat on the drive for a few years doing nothing
There’s petrol in the tank and a new Bearnach pump fitted. I’ve suction tested the pump to make sure it works and all lines are clear right up to the carb (Weber). When I disconnect the fuel inlet pipe to the pump fuel freely flows out in to the ground.
So, after hand pumping the fuel pump several hundred times... nothing, apart from the sediment bowl is now full but the pump outlet is completely dry.
Have got the LR running by feeding petrol straight into the carb hoping that while the engine was running the pump would start doing its job and take over...... but no.
So it’s like the fuel can’t get past the pump. Can’t think what could be wrong.
Any ideas guys? I’m baffled!
I’m moving house in a few weeks and need to get it going so that I can drive it to new place rather than tow it.
Cheers

Is it plumbed in & wired the right way round?
Only asking as i have done this myself....
Also check fuel filter flow direction and non return valve if fitted!

Hi there,
How do you mean wired? I replaced a pump a few weeks ago and fitted it like for like replacing the original with a new Bearnach. It only goes on one way with the sediment bowl at the back.
Not bothering with the inline filter until I get it going so fuel line straight into the carb
It’s still driving me crazy! I thought about replacing the sender, but then saw that the sediment bowl was full of fuel so can’t be that
Maybe I’m forgetting something really obvious (like we all do with LRs)

Sorry i was on auto pilot thinking of electric lift pumps... your right shouldn't be possible to fit yours backwards.
Possible that new pump is faulty??

Hey Mike,
I don’t think so as this problem is what made me replace the pump as I thought “Hmm, 44 year old pump, it could be that I suppose?”
I just don’t get it, the pump gets suction at the inlet when you block the outlet and I made sure that I got the arm on top of the cam when fitting and the bowl is full of fuel! It’s such a simple piece of mechanics I don’t see what could be wrong.
The pump is new, the carb is new, the lines are clear and there’s fuel in the tank!

and it runs fine with a temporary tank gravity feeding straight into carb?
How about testing with same temporary tank feeding in to pump to see if it may be an issue with feed from tank / tank breather. Long shot i know...

Sounds like a plan, will have to wait for next weekend now though.
What’s weird is that the fuel is definitely getting as far as the pump though to fill the bowl up

Yeah and with problems with the feed you wouldn't expect to have fuel run out of line to pump when disconnected either...cant hurt to test everything though. Keep us posted.

If I don’t fix it before I move I might just sell it as a non-runner
Don’t have much spare time to sort it out

When you feed fuel direct to the carb are you using fresh fuel or stale fuel from the tank? Old petrol deteriorates up to the point where it is useless.

Hi J, There was some very old petrol in the tank but was showing as empty. Have put about £10quids worth of fresh petrol in the tank and it’s running out of the feed from the tank nice and clear no jelly. We’re also using fresh for the carb feed and the juice in the bowl looks ok to me

After doing a bit of reading I reckon it might be a blocked fuel tank filter... is this something I can get to without taking the tank out????

Was it not worth having a mechanic fixing it and having a running vehicle for sale rather than a Non Runner which will likely get less money for you?
