Newbie here with a problem.
Have a 1999 2.7tdi terrano which wouldnt start just turn over, seen that immobliser light wasnt coming on and decided to swap the reciever ring around the ignition lock for one the same from a running terrano.
It then started for 5 seconds then stopped and now the light flashes until i try to start it when it decides to stay on solid.
Does this mean that its not picking up the right signal and i need nissan to recode the immobliser?

maany thanks.

Which key did you use? Was it the one to match the transponder?

Place the donor transponder away from the ign lock and tape the corresponding key to it. Then use any key which fits the ign barrel to start the car.

Do not place the 2 keys together near the transponder when trying to start the car.

The way i understand it, the nats immu ecu sends a signal to the transponder which then energises the chip in the key, the chip then sends a code back to the nats immu. Provided its the right code the nats immu will signal the ecu. Only the chipped key programmed to the vehicle will give the right code.
Thats Nats1.
Nats 2 is different again and i belive involves rolling codes and is a bit more complicated. Im not sure what year Nats 2 came in.

Yes i did it as you said key that matched new one and they were let hang down in foot well while i used original key to turn starter and it started but then cut out after 5 seconds and stopped pumping fuel then wouldn't start again and immo light on constant.
A nissan mechanic said it could have lost its code by maybe being too close to other key and need recoded.
Thanks.

do you have nats1, you will have a fob with a black and red button?
if so im pretty sure the immu can be bypassed, same as a p10 primera

from another forum

There are ways of bypaeeing the nats. First you need to know what noats syatem is fitted to your car.
nats 1 has the key fob (black with lock and unlock buttons)
nats 2 onwards will have a red or blue chip in the key by the key blade. (this syatem is very hard to bypass as it runs trough the ecu and control units)
on a micra K11 with nats 1, bepending on factory or accessory fitment, you can simply unplug the nats loom and control unit, and connect the origanal loom back in.

and further down the page

This has been covered so may times now. NATS 1 ONLY.
Find and remove the NATS immu, behind glove box.
disconnect and link the following wires.
1&2
5&6
7&8

3&4 leave off.
you should now have disconnected your nissan antitheft

on a P10 primera, these where mostly factory fitted. again if you have the black fob with the 2 buttons, these can be bypassed quite easy. you will need to remove the glovebox and heater motor to gain exess to the nats control unit. ( located on the A pillar) when you disconnect the nats unit you will be left with the wiring loom connector. all you have to do is branch the coresponding wires with each other. and there you have disconected nats.

there was a adapter you could fit onto the loom when you had removed the nats control unit. dealers where surposed to return it to nissan as the adapter had a surcharge of £100.

i believe they are nats2 as they have the red chip in the ignition key.
can nissan simply recode the existing key to work with the new reciever around the ignition that i have fitted.
thanks.

ok took it to nissan hoping it just need coded and have been told that the ecu is not responding and its more than likely a broken wire as we swapped the ecu with a known good one. would anyone have a wiring diagram for the ecu?
thanks.

Thinking about it, you have to have matching chip key, transponder and immu ecu.

Ok got the terrano going, basically i disconnected all bits for the immobliser/central locking and tried it with just the known good ecu connected and it started first go. dont know how or why but it runs lol.

Now because i have my good ecu fitted to this terrano i was fixing im just going to get myself a new ecu for my terrano and have found one local for parts but on my lwb 1999 terrano the ecu was in the passanger footwell but on this parts terrano which is a swb 1999 its not there are they in a different location on the swb models?
Both have the same type of key (red chip) so i assume it should be same ecu type.

Thanks.

As far as im aware theres no difference between LWB & SWB, Have trawled the manual but there dosnt appear to be any kind of ECU in the passenger side, then noticed the shape of the truck in the diag was a 2000 onwards, so im wondering if the pre 2000 have a different layout.

Have you got a part no from the ECU?
Is the transponder around the ign lock just a round ring, or does it have a little box affair attached?
Does your truck have a Nissan alarm system fitted?

The ecu is the same as link below and part number is the same.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-7-NISSAN-TERRANO-EC...sh=item2a21b4fd8f

Both have the ring around the key with the box attached to it.
I also though the ecu would be in the same place but when i lifted the carpet it wasnt there, i might have to go back and check a bit more in behind the dash.

If the ring has a box attached to it you will need the ecu, ring and box plus key from the donor vehicle.
You can get a good locksmith to cut a key to fit your existing barell and clone the chip from the key of the donor vehicle, if you dont want the hassel of changing the lock.
Ecu numbers must match.

The ecu might be in the centre of the dash, underneath the heater contol panel on the donor vehicle.

Hello

I found this thread useful. . . .but

I have 1998 Terrano, I had my little trailer hooked up for the first time this year. While starting car at DIY store, she just spun over and over, tried it a few times then thought I'd disconnect trailer electrics. Another few tries and she started. Got home and switched her off, while I stored trailer, then she wouldn't start, dead battery click click click.
I have had better issues before, the cross head screw bolt attaching Neg battery is prone to loosen if she idles for a long time.
Tried jump starting her with my other car, no joy. . . just turned over and over.
Took battery out and put it on charge.
Fired up computer and searched with "Google".
I found a mechanic on a forum saying to turn ignition off for 10 sec, then on for 2sec and repeat 3 times. Tried this in morning, but no joy.
Called AA for assistance, guy arrived and I explained what I'd tried.

He double checked the fuel relay in fuse box, had power and clicked when engine cranked over.

He then went to fuel tank to check "pump". . . had power supply but no sound or feeling of pumping. He eloped me park car on my drive (as it'd been on street overnight)

I returned to Google and there is no electric pump back there, just a sender unit with power to fuel gauge float.

I still think my trailer has blown or kicked out my immobiliser, or fried the engine management ECU. . . . . But would the plug in lighting board for a trailer effect the engine management . . ?

Any suggestions . . . . ?

Had similar problem.Terrano2 2.7tdi 1998.

Left small cockpit light on and battery was dead-ish next morning. Charged for an hour, nothing...battery was new (one year, 20.000km) and motor would turn but not start.
after reading here, charged battery for twelve hours and waited till early morning, when it was cool, cause we were having a heatwave here in Portugal. (still, was pretty sure it was an immobilizer problem).Battery full, but still would not start.

Then on a hunch, opened and closed car with fob a couple of times whilst sitting in the car. Switched headlights on , opened the door, to see if lights alarm worked.(had that switch replaced a few weeks earlier). Switched lights off while alarm was going beep beep...The sound stopped. Closed the door again (not with fob, just slammed it close. )Turned the key and TADAAAA!!!, it sprang on immediately. What a relief...I am not a mec, and had not yet tried the other tips here, wouldnt know where to find these parts on the engine anyway.
Not sure what i did right here, but worth a try before dismantling parts...
Hope this helps the next visitor here.
