Grrrrrrrrr!!! I'm at the end of my tether now. My abs light has come on again and today I thought I'd clean out my calipers and change my front brake hoses! All went well, just about then the bleed nipples were seized
I managed to crack them open after a lot of perciverance, bled the front as you do , I've topped up the brake fluid oil. Actually I done quite well for a begginer. Only thing is when I took the nearside caliper apart the pads were in great shape only thing was there were two clips, one on each piston which were rotten and decided that they would desintigrate. I thought nothing of it and carried on cleaning. I even phoned up a car place for advice and was told that the pads they supply don't have any clips as such. Just drove the car up the road and now the brae warning light has come on aswell as the abs light.
I feel this will drive me to an early grave.
Any tips from anybody pleases please. I really would be grateful. I know I'm due to change both front bleed valves tomorrow, but at the moment there ain't no leaks and the fluid level is right. What do them clips serve as

Are you doing your DIY maintenance on your Nissan using a 'Land Rover Discovery' Haynes Manual?
That might be your problem.

hope this helps explain the system!

Moved to the Nissan section for you.
George, that is possibly the funniest car geek joke I've seen in years. 5 stars

Taz, don't worry about posting in the wrong section, it's very easy to as there isn't a dedicated NISSAN section...........is there!

George, robbed and pased on, thats class.
Tazz, im not sure what clips your trying to describe, ive posted an exploded view of the Terrano front caliper assy, are they the "anti noise shims", if so just discard them and grease the back of the pads with copper ease.
The brake warning light could bo on for a number of reasons, 1) it does come on sometimes with the abs light due to an abs fault, 2) theres a brake vacumn warning switch on the nearside inner wing, if the vac pipe or electrical connector gets knocked off it brings the warning light on ( as i discovered i did an oil and filter change and knocked the vac pipe off), 3) Handbrake switch sticking due to fluff and old wine gums which have dropped into the centre console or youve not released the handbrake lever fully, 4) Is there a resovoir level switch in the brake master? (mine hasnt got one but then i dont have abs either) if so is the float stuck and are the wires connected?
Re the abs light, again numerous reasons, but mostly electronic rather than hydraulic/mechanical. Exactly when does the light come on?Does it go out when you turn the ign on but come straight back on again or does it go out once the engine has started, but come on at about 20 to 30 mph, or does it come on randomly while driving?
Check out all plug connections near the wheels for corrosion /dirt /water ingress. Check the reluctor rings carefully, they are the castellated ring fitted around the cv joint, if one is cracked it will slip under acceleration or braking and bring on the light.

Ivor your a gem, I just made a list of these and will be checking these off one by one later. I'll let you know how I get on. The abs light started to come on when I changed my wheel bearing, but nothing was dropped, the bolt that holds the sensor in the hub snapped but the sensor hasn't been tampered with, just cleaned from all the yuk in the whole and put back in.

Oh I almost forgot , your diagram, yes it's the anti noise shims, I'll be getting a few bits so I'll pick up some copper slip later, but while I'm here , when I took the hub off to replace the bearing, since then the hub moves very slightly in/out up/down, but just enough to create a random knocking ! is the hub supposed to press twist then bolt, or could it be the centre wheel nut ?

And that is most likely the cause of the problem, if theres no bolt holding the sensor in its hole the sensor will move and the air gap between the sensor and reluctor will change. The air gap is critical, the sensor only has to move .5 of a mm and it will lose contact with the reluctor

Just finished running through your remedies, and blimey you were right Ivor, the float in the reservoir had got stuck when the brake system emptied on the hose changes. Picked up new bleed valves but they were slightly different , the old ones had a sharp point, and the new ones had the pointed tip missing. They went in but I had to tighten them a little more deeper
Bled everything, and seems fine now. Tomorrow I will go through your checks for the abs,and yes the bolt snapped on the sensor when I was trying to do the bearing. Any better way to remove that broken bolt apart fron drilling and tapping? But really gotta say I thank you very much for your advice so far

Sounds like youve not got the drive shaft fully through the hub, and/or the bearing adjuster plates arnt adjusted properly.
Check the shaft is fully through the hub splines, then with the special tool, ( i use a blunt cold chisel or screwdriver) do up the first retainer ring as tight as you can without damaging it , then rotate the shaft/hub a couple of times and then back off the first ring untill you feel slight play in the bearing, then just nip up the ring untill any play goes, then fit the locking ring and screws
If it was my own vehicle, id try using Gripfill around the base of the sensor or Gorilla snot (mastic) and securing it with a cable tie.
If it was a customers car id drill out the old bolt and re-tap it

My brake light was on and it turned out the vacuum hose from the vacuum pump to the vacuum warning light switch had collapsed. The switch is mounted on the left inner wing panel.
