Hello, im new here because i need help (not just with my Morris Minor passion Laughing )

Im wanting to convert my Pickup into a 5th wheel for a custom trailer. something like this... but not with 2 x rear wheels.
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/862017184897896169/

But im confused at what i should be using? Should i use one like this... http://ccrv.co.uk/parts-services/4584418966 or one with the ball like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/GNRK1500-B-W-Turnoverba...ll-/300984307331?

I dont know what would be best?

As for weight, i really have no idea, but it wont be much im only wanting to make a workshop on wheels, or like a little camper or such.

Any advice or help much appreciated[/url]

Id go for the removable ball type with the mounting flush to the floor. That way when your not towing it wont be in the way or look ugly... then build the trailer to suit.

Cant believe that its legal to tow more than a few hundred K behind a moggie!?

Hi Mike,

But what would make it illegal? The "Midwife" was built before such restrictions were thought of, so no MGW was specified.

If you can find a copy, a very old edition of the INDESPENSION TRAILER CATALOGUE AND HANDBOOK might offer some guidance.

Me too, know quite a lot of people who use US pickups that way.

'legal' probably wasn't the right word to use given that is new information to me. Hadn't even occurred to me that there were cars built before the rules..

Had a bit of a google to find handbook and failed. Found this though:

It does seem to be recommended not to tow more than 85% of the vehicles weight??
Which for a moggie (775kg) would be 658kg? Makes the OPs project seem more viable! Smile

Cool, thank you for the information.... Now all i have to do is make it out of lightweight materials.

Im not very knowledgable on this sort of thing, but i do know how to weld..... More of a bloke thing to know about metal weights and making trailers, and if i ask at a trade place they look at me as if i should be sewing pin cushions or such!!

But thank you for your help its very much appreciated Laughing

Hi,

The 85% thingy was advice from the caravan club, to inexperienced drivers towing a caravan. Caravans handle differently from other trailers.

LEGAL STUFF.

All new trailers now require an SVA/IVA.

All trailers over 750kg MGW
must have brakes. Car brakes are not allowed.

An unbraked trailer's MGW must not exceed 50% of the ULW of the towing vehicle.

Brakes will make your trailer expensive.

Morris Minor tyres (5.20 - 14") are probably rated at about 600kg per axle.

Just because you are paranoid, it doesn't mean that they are not out to get you.

If you decide to go ahead, aim for 500kg MGW, and nail a label to the draw-bar saying that. Then be careful.

With that in mind i guess i can just be glad that the guesswork and 'ball park' maths i did on what you can legally tow is at least not completely misleading anyone reading it.

Wish OP would come back with an update on the project, i was quite looking forward to seeing progress! Smile
