Good day gents. I've gleaned some good information from and through this forum over the last few months. & I thank you for that. I like the AusJeep forum as well.

Particularly interested in all things diesel Jeep having recently started driving one and been immensely pleased chucking vegetable oil in and with driving it. Everywhere.

It's a '97 XJ Cherokee 2.5 diesel tdi sport with factory tow pack heavy duty suspension and LSD.
Emailed them chassis no. and got the original build sheet from the factory. Brilliant.

I got it amazingly cheap with only a couple of months MOT left, a number of stated faults including 'an oil leak', a noisy back axle and a worn panhard rod bush.

Here's what i've done in the six months or so I've had it.

The back axle though only noisy when decellerating had such a lot of play at the pinion shaft bearing it was dropping more oil from there than it was off the sump.

I searched for a few weeks and got lucky after I sourced a replacement back axle from someone a long way away on eBay and had it picked up by a friend who was in the area with a large van at the time .

The oil leak turned out to be a coolant mixed with oil (on the outside of the engine) leak .

By that I mean a small dribble from the turbo oil pipe was mixing with coolant escaping from the rear cylinder head, leaving a patch on the road .

The bargain back axle has good bearings and seals and a working LSDiff so I de-rusted it and gave it a thick coat of paint before putting it on. This led me to do the same with any other rusty bits on the bottom of the Jeep.

It was then that I realised the body was in really good condition for a 20 year old thing with no major rust so I cleaned it up a bit and repainted. My mate jacketed the silencer box with a sheet of steel for me .

The familiar cracked head situation seems to have been at least temporarily halted by chucking some of the green Steel Seal stuff in the coolant and idling for an hour whilst it did it's stuff. But I am on the look out for a spare genuine un-skimmed VM head if anyone has any.

The oil leak has reduced to an occasional drip and is next on the list.

Brake judder/pulsing was due to a combination of one of the front calipers having a stripped mounting bolt thread, lower ball joint shot on the other side and the sloppy panhard rod.

Ball joint was a bit of a bastardly job to do but apart from that I'm delighted with the way these things come apart.

Recently i've had a bit of bother going into occasional limp mode and also getting sporadic engine cutting out when going round a sharp corner.

Snapped off tip of MAF sensor the other day cleaning a little too indelicately (with toothbrush and contact cleaner ) and was not pleased at the prospect of having to spend half what I'd paid for the Jeep for a new replacement.

SO, did a bit of data mining and found one for a VM 2.5 engine Chrysler Voyager that works very well once re-housed in the jeep air duct pipe. & it only cost fifteen quid .

She drives lovely now but I just have to stop that little drip from the oil pipe at the turbo.
I love how torquey these engines are and how direct the power delivery is. Seems to have an excellent clutch .

It rained today and even just a few drips makes a mess on the road outside.

Does anyone sell these seals or will I have to make one?
