Hi all,

Just joined the forum and looking for some shopping advice. Sorry in advance for the long post!

I have previously owned a Disco Td5, Cherokee XJ and Grand Cherokee WJ. Their main purpose has been to tow our horses. I did some gentle off-roading in the Disco, the XJ was a temporary tow car after the Disco did the typical Landrover thing and tried to bankrupt me. The WJ was good to tow with but was the most unreliable car I think I have ever had! The horses now enjoy being towed by a Toyota Landcruiser Amazon 80. She is a 4.5 litre petrol with an LPG conversion and I love her.

The main issue is the LPG tanks have been mounted underneath and whilst she has great front ground clearance, she is very limited by the rear ground clearance and the LPG tank is pretty much the first thing I would ground out on. After long discussions with the wife she has agreed the solution is to keep the Landcruiser for horse towing duties only and I should get another 4x4 to go and play with (love my wife Very Happy )

As we both also have daily commuter cars in addition to the Landcruiser my new toy does not have to perform many tasks so I am looking for something that can do the following:

Decent greenlining (nothing over the top)
The odd long distance motorway drive (in order to then go greenlaning)
The odd over night sleep either in it with seats flat or on it in a roof tent
Stand-in horse trailer tow car should the Amazon decide to have a day off

I want something with a low ratio box and it needs to be a decent size and weight to cope with chucking the horse trailer on the back if needed (tow limited needs to be 2,7 tonne or above ideally) As this is car number 4 on the drive the budget is also pretty limited to around £1500. I frankly can't go through the heartbreak of a Landrover at this price as I know they will cost a fortune to keep on the road. So far I am considering the following:

Mitsubishi Challenger
Mitsubishi Shogun
Mercedes ML-Class
Nissan Terrano

I would love a second Landcruiser, maybe a Collorado, or a Nissan Patrol but both are out of my price range. Anyone got any other ideas, or feedback on the above options. Would probably be going for a petrol auto (no LPG conversions!)

Thanks Smile
