Ok how strong are the rear axles from a vitara? It's common knowledge the front is rotten but how strong is the rear? I've read they are almost the same size as a hilux axle so does that mean they're as strong?

Reason I'm asking is https://www.calmini.com/detail.php?b=2&m=5&a...&p=695&n=

Stronger halfshafts!! Are they worth it? Or can the rewritten axle with lockers etc hold upbto 33/35 inch tyres with a big loud pedal?

Anyone had any experience with the rear axle?

If you want to upgrade the rear axle, go for a full float conversion, it does add a bit of width but not much if you use vitara front stub axles.

It will easily hold up to 35s then.

The samurai calmini shafts (same diameter as Vit) aren't that much of an upgrade and I've heard of quite a few breaking in the US.

Vit diffs are stronger than samurai diffs and I've been running 33" tyres for years with no issues on sammy axles with a full float set up so I'm stepping up to 35s.

Thanks for the reply,

Scottie - I thought the calimini half shafts were ment to be even stronger,

I've never heard of vitara half shafts breaking and I know fave from b4v and matte were both running 35s and as far as I'm aware it wasn't the half shafts that we're breaking.

So are the upgraded half shafts just a waste of time / money then if the stock ones are already strong

Unless they have changed them I can't really say anything but although technically made from a stronger material than stock shafts over the years I have read about quite a few breakages in the US etc.

If you want to upgrade the shafts a full float conversion is the only way to go and it also gets rid of the weak rear wheel bearings and discs brakes bolt on.

Stock shafts should hold up to 33" tyres easily enough, I never broke a rear samurai shaft on 33s.

Ok thanks

Now please excuse my stupidity but what's the float conversion and what does it involve? Never heard of it,

Can yo u still use lift kits for vitaras with them?

Sorry about the delay, Basically a full float conversion means that you bolt some front stub axles onto the rear axle so you can use front wheel bearings and the calliper mounts, then you have custom half shafts that don't' have bearings pressed onto them etc, so the shaft no longer has to carry some of the vehicle weight, all it does is drive the wheels resulting in a much stronger set up that is also easier to service.

Tbh if you are sticking with 33" tyres or smaller I would worry too much about any rear upgrades just yet, It's the front diff and shafts I would concentrate on upgrading on a vitara.

Hello !
I`m from Romania and now I build a Vauxhall Frontera for off-road. They will have a 1.9TD engine PSA or VAG, Vitara gearbox+transfer+samurai transfer case (dual case), rear DANA44 5.13 and I want to runnin` on 34-35 tyres.
I want to build a hybrid front axle from a rear Vitara 5.13 and a Samurai wide front axle. Now the question is: What axles can I mounted in this axle and how much splines have Vitara rear diff ? 30 ? 33 ? Can I search some Toyota/Jeep half axles to put in it ?

Sorry for the bad english ! Sad

Post resurrection!?!

if you've got the engineering knowledge to perform a task like your talking about, it sounds like you would just be better off swapping the whole truck on to a pair of Toyota axles!

The Toyota or Nissan axle is very expensive in my country, but I have those Suzuki axles in my yard... The only problem is the half axles. I don`t know what to put in it Sad and I`m not sure if the Vitara diff is beefy enough to run 34-35 tyres...

Vitara rears diffs are 26 spline, combined with these it should easily cope with 34-35" tyres as long as it's not a really heavy build.
