Morning All,
I am on the hunt for a pick up and have narrowed it down to either the Ford Ranger or The Isuzu Rodeo years 2006 to 2010.
I am hoping you guys can offer some feedback on which is the one to go for.
I am inclined toward the Isuzu as my web searching leads me to believe it is more reliable and offers better economy over the long run.....
The Ranger however does seem to be pretty well respected and if looked after will last a while....but I worry about the number of fuel pumps that I have read about failing at great cost.
Any input would be most helpful

P.S. The truck will not be used for "heavy" work or towing, just lugging strong man equipment around...500kg max at a time and also used for expedition trips around Europe and beyond so economy, comfort and reliability are all factors I ask too much perhaps!

Like you I'd probably go for the Rodeo
Not sure now if the Ranger is a rebadged Mazda or the Mazda is a re-badged Ranger

The ranger of that year is a rebadged Mazda.
I had an 2007 Ranger Thunder 2.5td and a 2010 Rodeo Plus 3.0td.
The Ford was much more car like, very nice to drive, part time 4wd with a low box and rear LSD. You had to stop the first time you put into 4wd whilst the front hubs engaged but after that you could switch on the fly at upto 60mph until you decided you didn't need 4wd anymore and press the button to disengage the front hubs. The 4wd system was a stick too which in my opinion is much better than electronic. Downsides were it was too high geared for towing, a few times I had that nasty clutch smell setting off and once I even had to use low box to get it rolling then go from low 3rd to high 1st which your really not meant to do. In 80,000 miles I had a few problems with the front suspension, load brake valve, battery & alternator + a few niggles.
The Isuzu was much more agricultural, a real workhorse, towed really well, gearing was low and the torque was in the right place so you weren't thrashing it. I really liked it but it was more truck like where as the ford was more car like. Similar to the ford high and low box with rear lsd but an all electronic system, however you don't have to stop the first time you engage 4wd. In 100,000 miles it didn't have any faults or repairs.
MPG wise both were low 30s. All depends how you drive them and what you do with them.

Two things make me want the Ranger: price and interior...cheaper and nicer interiors are tempting aspects.
I mean, if the Ranger pulls 30mpg average and is reliable then it wins for me...
The rodeo just seems to be more reliable and efficient but having no hands on experience I don't know...cue you guys

Great post, thank you.
I love hearing the reliability stories of the Isuzu and it really sways me in that direction.
I guess it's just a case of seeing what comes up at the right time and within my budget...

If your going to be doing a lot of towing or farm work etc I would say the Isuzu every time but if it's just general plodding about then the Ford might be more comfortable although I never found the Isuzu uncomfortable. I don't think the ford will be any less reliable than another vehicle of the same age.
I'm in a D-max at the moment which is quieter than the Rodeo on the motorway and quicker accelerating for overtaking etc but it's an auto and it has a really old fashioned feel to the gearbox, I'm getting 5mpg less in the auto than my friend gets in an identical manual. Got an Amarok coming in April so let's see what that's like.

ON the off chance...I may be looking at a Rodeo later that the seller has said has an air flow meter error...
In my experience air flow meters are a simple replacement and easy peasy to sort...any experience with this?

It was in the air box on mine. I got water in the air box once and it went into limp home mode because the ecu lost connection with the air flow meter for a few seconds.. I dried the air box but had to reset the error code before it would come out of limp home mode. I did it with the torque app on my phone and a Bluetooth odb adaptor.
If it's faulty it would be easy to fix but I don't know if the code would need clearing too? That's assuming it's that part and not wiring or a deeper problem. I'm always cautious when someone is keen to tell you how easy something is to fix but hasn't done it before the sale?

That Torque app has helped me loads in the past but of late it never seems to connect to any car I try it on

Mine won't connect to citroen which is random as you'd think it'd work with something so common. Worked on the isuzu though:)
I think the cheap adaptors can be iffy and it only does engine stuff so I wonder if that confuses things.
