Here goes...

Full tank of BP diesel. Travelled 30 miles yesterday without incident. Today, stops at random. Will restart when whirring from tank stops.

Travelled 20 miles to friendly mechanic without incident. Changed filter, still stops at random. Drove to electric eccentric, no faults showing.

What next?

Any constructive advice welcome. I've had the vehicle for over a decade and this may be the end of what has been a great relationship!

I had a similar problem which turned out to be a less than perfect soldered connection that was OK for a number of years but vibration and corrosion etc. caused it to "loose" contact and cut the engine. After a bit of thumping and swearing it would restart. It was an absolute bu**er to find - not quite sure where it was as an electrickery wizard found the fault somewhere near the steering wheel. Once found all he did was to re-solder the connection and problem solved.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

The upshot of all this was a faulty ECM.

The new one cured the running issues, but the temperature gauge needle goes into the red box when started from cold and ends up in the blue box when at running temperature.

What's that all about?

If I remember correctly that happens if you use a discovery ecu on a defender.
And i dont think you can reprogram it to work properly.

The new ECM was supplied by Land Rover and they say it is programmable, but there's no provision for coding the water temperature gauge.

I'm wondering if the new ECM and the gauge (which afaik is original ie 1998) are not compatible...

If its new i think you can program it but i assumed it was second hand.
And i was under the impressing that you could only prog as a disco or defender once from new.
