new rules now on cats,if it should have one it must be there at mot.
i took mine off my rover deisel and knocked the inside out and put the shell back on...passes mot no problem as they test for smoke on a deisel not emmisions like a petrol engine.

I've had my 1996 300tdi Disco for 5years. It has a straight through exhaust.
The first time I took it for its MOT there was some discussion between the two testers about the legality of my Disco; the garage owner and senior tester pointed out that due to its age some vehicles had a factory "cat" fitted, others didn't, and there's no records of which were which. The result was that it was given a pass since the lack of cat was not a reason to fail it if they couldn't prove it should have one. Same with the lack of rear anti roll bar. I've never had a problem since. But then again as it's a Land Rover it spends a lot of time in their garage, so they know all about it...

A driver at work was an MOT tester; for newer cars which must have a cat which are starting to break down he advises to do what Xamtex has done, and for the same reasons.
