|
|
|
After years of building different off roaders from, SJ's, Samurai's, Vitara's, Disco & even a daihatsu !
I am now looking to go bigger & better but the choices confuse me a little !! Any help & advise would much appreciated as to the best vehicle for mods & ultimately off road use ! I'm not looking to go rock crawling I like mud more & water
My choices are :: Landy 90 - Landy 110 - jeep Cherokee - Jeep Wrangler (3 or 5 door)
If there is any other option please advise me ! I'm looking to go big so lift of up to 6" or higher if possible & 33" or 35" wheels ??
I am not to concerned on the money side as long as it's not loads average spend including vehicle £15, 000 total

That's great thanks , I was leaning towards the wrangler on because of the amount of kit available for them & an easy to install 6" lift kit

I've always fancied a rubicon, great spec if you can find one.

right, be careful with the 6" lift.
its for LHD vehicles and doesnt fit rhd without a fair bit of messing.....
also,
it doesnt really need it...

Out of that list I'd go for a wrangler (second that rubicon), you don't have to lift them so high to take stuff like 33's either 6" is pretty extreme!

Depends what you mean by ultimate?
The current JK Wrangler Rubicon is pretty ultimate as a factory vehicle.
Strong chassis, strong Dana 44 axles, easy to lift. Will run 35" tyres no problem. Stock front/read diff locks, super low low range, off road TCS, electronically detachable anti roll bars.
The 3 door is also fairly small and nimble with great ramp over, departure/approach angles.
But the snag is, they are rare in the UK in RHD or even imported LHD. And I suspect will set you back £20-30k.
The regular Wrangler JK is also very good. But even those are likely to be around £12-14k to buy.
So are you going to be smacking up such a new, tidy and pricey vehicle off road?
Older Wranglers like the TJ or even YJ are brilliant too. Although no better or worse than a Land Rover Defender/Series in many ways. And will need the same sort of things doing to them.
XJ Cherokee's are just as capable as a Wrangler, but less money. A little more body work to deal with and if you were rock crawling, then the unibody is not quite as rigid as a ladder chassis. But can be addressed.
But there are other options. Lots of US trucks come with strong axles and available Detroit lockers and the like. From Bronoc's to Blazers to full size trucks like a K Series Chevy.
For a mud truck, these might suit.
Although in the UK you may find such a truck a little on the large side of things.
Actually in the UK you'll probably struggle to top the capabilities of something like this:
80" Coiler V8 Land Rover. But many are not road legal and road manners are poor on any of them.
If however 'ultimate' is what you are after. Then you might want to look outside the box a little bit further.
