hello,
I'm looking at buying a land rover series 2a,
The seller says it was built in 1963 and the current mot online confirms that but when you do an mot history check it comes up as a 1973
i asked the seller why this was and he said that someone took the plate off and an age related plate was registered to it.
is that something to be worried about as i guess in a few years it should be mot exempt?
Also i asked if the chassis number matched on the log book, he said he cant find a chassis number on the car anywhere,
the car is about 2 hours away from me and i want to go and look but don't want to buy something that is worthless because theres no chassis number,
also i thought there has to be a chassis number stamped on the car somewhere for the MOT?

I'd be very wary about it - if the plate was removed then DVLA would have issued a Q plate with no details. As far as I can remember DVLA would or could not even issue a plate against a chassis number even if known...

Oh and a 63 plate would have been ABC 123 A while a 73 would be ABC 123 K

thanks for the reply,
the reg starts with an A
i wouldnt have thought it would have been issued with a Q plate as i would have thought it would be the same as swapping plates about on any other car,

If it starts with an A then it is a that would make it a 82 - 63 ended with an A
DVLA will not put a newer plate on an older vehicle

If the registration starts with an A it's an 82 or newer - it can not be a 63, therefore not a 2A series Landrover - walk away

Hi,
Are we talking about the same thing?
A-suffix eg: NNN999A would have originally been issued by SOME local authorities in 1963. It would also have been issued later by DVLC when they needed to give an old number to, for instance, a Cherished Transfer donor, or a military vehicle entering civilian life, or first registration of a "barn find". All of these spurious registrations are entitled to a correct year registration, FOC, but you have to pay for the new plates yourself.
999CBA is not an A-suffix. It would have been allocated between 1960 and 1962, or up to 1963/1964 by some local authorities.
A-prefix eg A999NNN would have been issued circa 1982 (I can't find my book to check) by all local authorities.
ABC999 is not an A-prefix. It was the standard format for all registrations prior to 1960ish. Please don't go all pedantic over me, I know things got more interesting the further back you go.
Your registration must not suggest that your truck is younger than it really is.
Check that the chassis number on the V5 matches the chassis number on the plate on the bulkhead, in front of the gear lever. To be pedantic, this is the Commission Number ... vehicles built before 1980 did not have VIN plates, although there may be a FEW that were allocated at a later date, for some questionable reason.
A 1963 REGISTERED vehicle should have either a 3 or a 4 as the fourth character of the chassis number. the chassis YEAR number changed after the Summer holiday break in September, so a 4 could indicate it was a 1964 model, but manufactured at the end of 1963. A 3 would indicate it is a1963 model, registered in 1963, but POSSIBLY manufactured in 1962.
My S2 has a 1960 chassis number, and was registered in May 1960, but was actually built in December 1959, so is MOT exempt.
If you are not already, get yourself subscribed to the LAND ROVER SERIES 2 FORUM, which is where you will find the experts on these trucks. The forum will make you welcome, but you will need to join the Club if you want to use their resources to reregister your truck.

Doh! Me again.
<<< also i thought there has to be a chassis number stamped on the car somewhere for the MOT? >>>
Hi,
No! Not having a chassis number is NOT an MOT fail on a pre-1980 vehicle.

It may not have been a bargain. It could have been a lemon or not even an S2. As you never saw it, you don't know. In fact, the new Owner may not even know whether it was a bargain or lemon until he has owned it for a year.
