i have severe coolant loss. dripping from front of engine, quite high up and central. any suggestions or ideas?

I'd suspect a worn water pump bearing.

Check the plastic coolant expansion tank as they have a habit of splitting on the moulding seam. If you have an original black one it is most likely knackered. Replacement ones are a whiteish colour and you an see the coolant level through them. Easy way to check the tank is to look at it with the engine reving at about 2,000 rpm as usually they don't leak on tickover.

Poss "P" gasket between water pump housing and block? quite a common area for coolant loss? Worth a look from side above alternator where steel block face meets aluminium housing.

The P gasket is a pretty common failure. Hope you got a decent replacement, otherwise you'll be doing it again soon enough!

I've had to do it a couple of times, so I'd advise you copper-slip the bolts.
