Hello to all,
i have just purchased my first ever X90. I havnt even driven it yet (was on ebay)

Anyway my intention is to use it for my drive to work (20 odd miles) and some light off roading.

So i would love to know what mods people would advise, how much they gonna cost and where can i get the parts. I can spend about £500 and i obviously want to lift it and get bigger wheels and tyres, what else can i do.

Many thanks.

For light offroading all you need is a tyre with an offroad tread (maybe £80 a tyre) and some decent recovery points front and back (basically free if you can fabricate).

I wouldn't lift it unless you find yourself bellying out as you degrade the road manors of the car and can cause knock on problems with the driveline.

I would recommend getting it and driving it for a while before you modify it in any way incase its a pup. Once you've spent money on the mods you can't really get it back so are committed to spend the extra to fix it.

i would suggest a large bash plate to cover the front diff and gearboxe's
you can make one easily from ally sheet

and a set of decent tyres should be fine

If you are going to lift... don't really lift more than 1.5" otherwise the angles on the front axle CV joints will be increased too much and it can lead to premature failure.

If you are interested in some good tyres for road and a bit of mud I would highly recommend the Kumho KL-71.
Good in mud but also very good road manners and minimal tyre roar

Brill, thats some great advise thanks all.

Im probably mad buying it but it was as cheap as chips has 11 months mot left. It was a cat c 5 years ago but worth the risk i think.

Im gonna get it looked at first then i think i will just lift it 1.5 inch as mentioned with the tyres as mentioned and see what thats like.

Cheers.

edit.... can i just ask all that would be ok using the wheels that are on it,what about widening the wheels or is that complicated or not worth it.
It says the tyre size is 195/65 15 is that the size i need.

i assume you have got the 4x4 version and not the 4x2 one?
you can get some 205x15 tyres on those rims easily gives you a bit more of a lift.
the truoble with lifts is that the strain is far greater on the rest of the drive train esp the front
i along with many others who have multi inch lifts have broken a few ally dif cases so we have gone for the steel ones, then the cv joints break more often but esier to fix than a diff!
having a flat bash plate all along means that you can slide over things as the lack of ground clearance will make grounding more likely.
good luck with it.
where are you?

Ok cheers mate, im in Essex a place called Saffron Walden.

As you can imagine by the questions i dont have a clue how to do these mods. I wanted a Vitara for light off roading and my drive to work but this came up on ebay and i won it for a low price.

And yes its the 4x4.

Cheers.

In that case I would suggest some 1.5" spring spacers and some 1.5" shock extensions if you lift it in future... quite easy and relatively cheap.
Will add as well, if you did lift over 1.5" you would need diff drop brackets to save the CV joints

Cheers.

Nice one mate,

I have just had a thought what is the difference in off roading and greenlaning.

I assume grennlaning isnt as rough so would suit my car better,is that correct.

most green lanes will be a lot less extreme than pure off roading.
there will be some though that the ruts will be made by land rovers, (wider track) and farm vehicles so as they get deeper you need more clearance than most smaller off roader have.
some would argu that going when it is that bad is not very good for our image.
unless you are in wales or devon ect, rock steps ect are not that common so a small green lane trip should be ok in a std vehicle, but as you know we all get carried away and start attending play days where you can get into some pretty extreme terrain if you want to.
the terrain in the vid is from the bovington, dorset tank ranges where apart from some deep water holes you can go almost anywhere ina std vehicle with suitable tyres.
the more you do the more you may want to modify your vehicle to the lengths some of us on here have done.
your driving style, budget and mechanical know how is really your limit.
there are some very knowledgeable people on here and some not so!
take a look at the various site like 'bits for vits' to see what is available and the costs.
i spent 3 x what i was initialy going to spend on mine before i even got it dirty!

Yeah i can imagine mate. Cheers again for the reply. Perhaps it wasnt the wisest move buying the X90 but i like to be different. I also do need the vehicle for driving to work so thats another consideration.

I think for the time being a smallish lift some decent tyres and protection underneath may be the way to go.

I just gotta find where to buy the bits for doing that.

Cheers for your help mate.

The first vitara I built was one I used for just greenlaning.

All I done was a 2" lift and a set of dirt tyres (Marshall ventures) it went everywhere I pointed it, never had one single problem with it.

I used it day to day for work and family too never a problem.

Tyres and lift is all you need, get a couple of recovery strops and shackles too just incase you get stuck and you'll be fine. A shovel, and saw can come in handy too.

I've gone mad with the one in building now but I'm planning on using it for heaver offroading but it'll be trailered to places and not really road use.

Cheers mate,

My only concern is a vitara is a fair bit higher than an X90 as standard or at least i think it is. That could be where my limit is with the height.

i think the chassis is the same so unless the body sits down less than the vitara it should be ok.
if you on facebook there are a few suzuki off road pages as well as the suzuki club page & forum.

Me again

Ok i assume a tyre 205/70 R15 would be ok and does anyone have any experience of these,
Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10.

Oh and one thing i have not mentioned the car is pink......haha yes stop laughing now.
So apart from rapping it which i would do does anyone have any other cheap ideas to change that colour.

Thats nice mate. Looks the dogs and i would imagine a fairly expensive build but well worth it with that end product.

Can i just ask would i need extended brake hoses and i think i read propshaft spacer if i were to raise mine 2 inches.

Cheers mate.

you should be ok with brake lines on 2in lift'
the prop spacer i would recomend as there is more strain on the uj's as it is.
yes lots spent but does go most places with not mush effort

Cheers again mate and sorry for all the questions. I have no clue about what to do and i want to make sure i get everything correct and dont break the bloody thing before i have driven it.

I have been advised this but is that over kill and to pricey can i get something cheaper and as good or is that exactly what i need.

that does look a good price, just what you need and quite easy to fit it.
it may take a day to do as long as the nuts are not too rusty
good luck and don't mind asking questions, some of us have learnt the hard way!

Mine cost £25 to respray and a day and a half of my own time that's with rubbing down and taking the doors, bonnet, wings, and bootlid off.

Its not finished yet but you get the idea. It was white inside and out originally
