If the van is a camper , everything that is added to it - sink, fridge, toilet, beds, etc., is added to the payload of the van, and if you start carrying stuff like awnings, barbecue etc. then you are going to have to be very weight concious - best thing is to weigh the van loaded

Yes. If it were for hire/reward you'd have more rules to follow.

As far as I am aware (so don't trust the opinion of an idiot ) they do not apply it retrospectively but I wouldn't like to say where you would stand if the year was not stated. Mine was made by a local agricultural trailer firm who didn't plate it so I plated it on their behalf with their name, year it was made and weights. As far as I'm concerned it's up to them to prove its inaccurate, but I do have a receipt to back it up.
When I was doing the plating I spoke to a few people as you do as I know the axles make it rated at 2700kg, however the hitch is a 3500kg unit which is marked at 3500kg, the general feeling I got is that if I was pulled without the plate it would be taken as a 3500kg trailer as that was the only visible weight. I wouldn't like to say if the same logic can be applied to tyre rating though?
As for the hitch I believe if it's braked it should have an emergency cable which is usually attached to the bottom of the lever that your hitch pushes on. If you do attach a cable you can't use a clip at the car end directly as they are not considered strong enough to apply the brake, you need to loop the cable or use a shackle or whatever.
I can't see a problem with the overrun brake you describe, the 'new' type that people talk about usually refers to the reverse mechanism. To reverse the old ones you had to get out and throw a little latch over to lock the head in the forward position, people used to forget and drive around with no brakes so they changes the rules so that it has I be automatic. Usually as a function of the hub rather than the hitch head.
I've been pulled by vosa and the police a few times in various vehicles for roadside checks and often they will say nice tidy setup you've got there, we'll check your brake lights then you can get on your way. So it just goes to show if it looks right it doesn't attract attention. I've only once had the full works and that took well over an hour :/ Make sure your tyres, lights, mud guards etc are all right and it looks a safe setup.
I saw a great trailer the other day, had leaf suspension and they'd obviously decided it needed to carry more weight and the only thing that could possibly need changing is the suspension, so they'd welded a coil spring in the middle of the axle. Poor axle was like a banana and the wheels had about 20 degrees of camber

Of what use is jobs in India in the UK?
OK it's a spamming
Have I reported it?
NO
Why not?
Because if we had conscientious moderators on this forum they would log in every day to see what's happening AND even make a post of some sort - not wait for a member to do a moderator's job and report a post
I suppose it'll be the usual reply... The moderators are busy and have other things to do first

I saw it and deleted it.
And yes, we have day jobs, and often they get in the way of real life!

Not been away, just very very busy at work. Business is becoming an overnight success after 17 years!
I look in every day but with my 4x4 activity being just a couple of competitions a year I've not got much to add and most of my summer vehicular activity being Veteran, and that is not too often, my online presence is greatly reduced.
I have a possible new purchase though ..... just got to sort out the recovery of the original reg number before I part with cash and collect it. It will be posted up on here first

2 good reasons for that...
People believe that everything will become too expensive if we leave the EU...
and that they won't be able to afford it if we remain!

Oh... and when it goes quiet it's because your potential customers are buying up euros ready for their holiday in Europe in July and August

I don't sell to the public and my investment in a business development manager in Aberdeen is paying off. Offering better service at better prices to companies who are desperate to make savings. They used to ignore us because the money savings were nothing in comparison to their overall expenditure. Now they'll make a lot of effort to save tuppence.

Hi,
Your towing limit is defined on your driving licence.
If you exceed that/those limits, you are driving without a licence for that vehicle.
If you drive without a licence, your insurers will not pay-up. That could ruin a lot of lives.
602
PS. Insurance certificates used to say (do they stilll?) .... " The insured holds, or has held a licence to drive the vehicle, and is not disqualified ".
Years ago, I read of a court rulling that "disqualified" referred to disqualification by a court, and did not include "medical" disqualification. I would prefer not to have to discuss that with "Their Worships".

No ~ two things I wouldn't want to do:
- argue with a judge
- argue with an insurance company!

how do you achieve coupled brakes on a landy as its not air like trucks
Hi,
Make it worth my while, and I reckon I could do ... but somewhat contrived.
However, there would be a problem "on the side".....
Unless things have changed, trailer brakes may not be operated hydraulically.
OK, so lets look at the brakes on my old Armstrong Siddelly Witney, or nearer home ... Austin A30 and A35. All those cars had hydraulic front brakes, and mechanical rear brakes.
So, add two more hydraulic wheel cylinders (which will probably mean a bigger master cylinder, probably needing a servo), and use the rods to operate the trailer brakes. Probably not that easy, but I'd be surprised if it couldn't be done.
Interestingly, the Armstrong's master cylinder was literally hung in the middle of the hand brake linkage. Pressing the brake pedal shortened the effective length of the master cylinder ... the master push-rod was pulled into the cylinder.
My brain still hurts.
