Was driving one of the works cars yesterday and it occurred to me that on initial start up (or any key turning start) you have the wait for the glow plugs or whatever it they do.

But it also had this eco system that cuts the engine when stationary (or almost stationary as I found out that the engine would cut out as I deliberately coasted up to the lights) but starts immediately again when the clutch is depressed...

...can't both be right?

Can they?

Glo plug are only in operation when the engine is cold - when it is hot they are not needed...

IF the engine is cold and the eco system cuts it - it will take more fuel to start than was saved and you'd get a lumpy ride

Stop-start only kicks in when the engine is warm.

Interesting & thanks.

I'll check that out next time I'm in one of those cars.

It should also monitor the battery level so that it won't cut out unless there is plenty of power in the battery to restart it but it turns out that system doesn't always work Confused

I also find it a bit disconcerting with the push putton start cars as you push the button then sit there twiddling your thumbs whilst it fires the glow plugs then cranks.

On a side note my wifes diesel citroen which we've had 6 years has never needed the glow plugs according to the dash light. The light comes on with the test when you first turn the key but goes off with all the other lights. It does this even in the depths of winter despite being a 10 year old car now and it never struggles to start despite still being on the factory battery. I wonder if as part of their drive for efficiency they've gone higher compression and so you don't need much preheat?

I had a car with stop start.

It was in 1982 and was my first car. Every time I stopped in traffic the engine stopped until I started it again.

It was a 1967 6 volt beetle with automatic choke. I spent many hours adjusting that choke so that it would not over rev when hot, but would keep the engine running when cold.

I never got it to work properly.
