Hi,

1959 Series 2 Land Rover, fitted with new gauge, sender, and voltage regulator. In order to be new, I had to change the instrument cluster thingy.

Gauge worked ... and then it didn't. Connect voltage regulator wires together, gauge works.

Fit new regulator... gauge worked ... and then it didn't. Connect regulator wires, gauge works.

Connect regulator wires together through a switch ... gauge works when switched on.

Gauge reads 1/4 full ... which is about right (dipped). Drive to garage, first time on road since 1974. Add 10 litres of petrol, then find a Niagra of fuel pouring off the tank, origin unknown. Stop filling, drive home. Leak stops within a matter of yards.

Arrive home, throw switch ... gauge reads FULL. Can't be right! Dip tank this morning, tank is just below half full, which is where 10 litres should have taken it.

Q1. Would the lack of a regulator cause the gauge to over read?

Q2. Why is my Landy eating regulators?

I think the regulator malfunctioning (or bypassing it) would be letting too much voltage through and affecting the resistance of the sender making the gauge read wrong.
are your other gauges misbehaving though? surly they would share the same regulator as they are set of matched gauges..?

As for why its eating regulators? is your alternator regulator not working and over powering whole electrics??

Hi Mike,

Thanks for that.

Usually, the temperature gauge and fuel gauge work off the same regulator.

But in 1959, Land Rovers didn't have temperature gauges.

I guess I will have to try another new regulator, feed it through a switch, and only switch the gauge on when engine is switched on, but not running. I mean, it's a Land Rover, so driver needs a comfort break ever few miles.

Can only try! didn't realise it wouldn't have other analogue gauges..

A short on sender or a short in the wiring between the sending unit and gauge would reduce resistance causing the fuel gauge to read full as well....

Have you found where your fuel leak was?
