Any landing you can walk away from is a good one... Smile

Absolutely. My flying manual says that the objective of landing the aircraft is to get it back on the ground. It doesn't say anything about in how many pieces.

Incidentally, I still have the scars from the Buc.

a good pilot has the same amount of landings as takeoffs.

the objective of landing the aircraft is to get it back on the ground. It doesn't say anything about in how many pieces.

a good landing is one you can walk away from

a great landing is one where they can use the plane again

and for those on the ground...

State One - A tannoyed message that precedes impending doom and another £25M bill for the taxpayer, and causes an egress of personnel from their work place for a butchers-hook at the fire works.

State Two - Not as much fun as a State One, but a good excuse for the stringed fellows to jump in their nines, tens, and elevens and get the blues and twos blaring.

It was cold outside, although the cold was getting in through the hole, so I stuck with it 'cos I don't like the cold. It was all in one bit when I got it in but there were some cracks in the wing roots and the hook got bent.

If you want to see the scars you will need a torch - and no, they are not in that place where I got scalded due to sh*t boiling in my ar*e!

although couldnt be as bad as this...

on 25th May 1957 at RAF Horsham St Faith, Javelin Mk4 XA732, when taxiing, had a fuel tank attachment fail causing the tank to drag on the ground. As the Javelin’s favourite habit was catching fire, this one also kept to the script and wrote itself off.

unfortunately the ATC guy that day was newly qualified and before he could be stopped, cried over the airwaves "you`re on fire"

Two Hunter Mk4 aircraft of 74 Squadron reacted to the ATC call; both aircraft were written off but no one died. XE661 abandoned take off, overshot the runway and went through a hedge into a field. XE662 was in the circuit and the pilot tried to set it down pronto but made a mess of it (probably not helped by the undoubted Chinese Writing in his underpants!). He bounced hard, the seat fired (injuring his arm) and the Hunter (now without its driver) finished its career demolishing the wall of an airmans’ block.

We were doing some high altitude equipment testing and something popped allowing some nasty gassy stuff to get in making it difficult to breath and to see, so it was a bit hairy coming back in. It was a joint effort. There was a big bump as the back end hit the deck first, and probably more by luck hooked first wire, but it worked so we had a bang but no splash! I never really found out very much about the "repairs" needed as that job was all over when I came out of hospital and they wouldn't let me near another one. Can't think why!

I sometimes think I was the King Lunatic, or should that be King Mug as I always got put up for the dangerous jobs. But I was the one that got the rides and if I was lucky the drives. Still, better than the boring backroom stuff taking readings and inspections.

Edit to add comment:
Just realised what you mean by "THEM lunatics" (sorry, old age and all that slowing me down). Yep, definately lunatics but good fun and I enjoyed working with them - especially teaching the bootnecks a sense of humour (yah still can't catch me!!!)

The 3 Degrees? That's a girl group popular some years ago.

Landing; back end down a bit, front end up a bit, fullish flaps and full throttle - unless you are landing in a big field and had to read the instruction manual, but only Blue Jobs need to do that.

Yeah well, things were different in those days back in the 1960s when all this happened to me and before health and safety was invented and people used their inventiveness (the thing that made Britain great) to do what had to be done.

Happy days,

It's a long while since I did theory of flight but isn't the speed of sound at flight level around 650mph?

which would make the Hunter super rather than sub?

no.

mach 1 at sea level is 761mph

but its affected by more than altitude..

temp and barometric pressure play a part.

most none rodneys say its "about 750mph" and that covers most games of top trumps.

Oh my God! It’s even better than what my girlfriend did. She was waiting for the green light and instead of going forward, she drove backwards. She didn’t notice the reverse gear was on. She hit the car behind. She’s a blonde so a lot is explained in this situation.
