vitara front prop question,
i have just replaced the leaking front prop seal on the transfer box on my vitara 4u2 and the amount of sliding movement seemed to me to be quite a lot, i know there has to be some movement, but as the diff case and transfer box do not really move away from each other like the rear axle does why is there so much play?
surely this would allow more crap to get behind the cover when off roading and especialy water crossing.
any one have an idea?

Doesn't it slide so you can remove it once un bolted from the front diff? So it has to slide far enough on to be strong enough at the transfer case end.
Does the rear axle move much relative to the transfer case? I don't think it goes very far.
On a less serious note maybe it's because Mr Suzuki knew we'd want to move our front diffs when fitting suspension lifts so gave us some movement...

I did consider the movement needed when taking the prop off but it is a lot more than really necessary, imho!

Okay rephrasing slightly - I think the length the splines can push on the stronger the joint between output and prop. Which will result in more sliding when you fit it - so I don't think its play for the sake of play - its for the sake of length of the splined fitting...

How much play we talking mate?
They got a slight bit sort of enough to feel it but not loads.
If you move it side to side does it clunk like a metal to metal sound?
I had a 1991 vitara with loads of play in the front prop it didn't sound to good but never caused me any problems and I drove that hard.
The other 3 I've owned 1993,1994 anda 1998 haven't had any excessive play.

well I reckon I could get a 10mm spacer between the prop flange and the diff flange, no side to side play though!

10mm - that would allow you to remove the propshaft in any position.
If you were talking 25-50mm then I'd say you had a problem

ok that sounds fine then, just thought it a lot just to enable it to be removed.
no sign of a leak now though and quite an easy job really.
all ready for the next bovington 4x4 day next sat
