Can someone please clarify for me the business of how many splines the various front diff variants have.

I see that most if not all rears have 26 spline side gears, but see the fronts quoted as 22/26. What does that mean?? one side 22 and the other 26? (seems crazy, surely?)

I also see that a steel front case would be 26 spline, as per the rear, is this correct?

I'm asking because I have a 1994 1.6 litre auto Vitara which I believe will have a diff ratio of 4.something:1 and as I have 31" tyres, the gearing is too tall, and I wish to reduce it to 5.125:1 to get my low range back where it should be. Whilst doing this, I wanna also go to steel front (obviously) and to further complicate, I want to fit a LockRite centre in both ends.
The LockRite comes either as a complete kit including side gear replacements (couplers), or, re uses the existing side gear. However, the full version is only available at 26 spline. If you have 22 spline, it seems you have to re use your old side gears, which I don't want to do.

Am I on track so far??

To summarise, if I find a steel front, it will mean I have 26 spline F & R, so can order the full LockRite for both ends?

Or better still, if I can find someone who has a pair of axles for sale that are 5.125:1 with a steel front case (i.e., already converted ratio), all I need to do is fit the LockRites.

Any help, confirmation etc gratefully accepted.

One last question, I assume that if I get a steel front, with 26 spline side gears, I will require a new OS drive shaft with 26 splines? but the integral NS shaft would stay?

Jon

as far as I can tell the early vitara's had a front diff spline count of 22, but the later grand's, 4u and 4u2 had a spline count of 26.
so if you get a steel case the diff would need to be matched to the rear in ratio as the steel diff case is a late edition model.
I had to have my 4u2 diff put into a steel case to match my rear one.
I assume you could reuse the 22 spline diff gears.
a lot of people me included have a stubby shaft made so you can use earlier shafts as well as later ones on the front.
I have just got a Spartan locker for my vit but have not decided on which axle to fit it to.
good luck

Thanks for the reply.
I want to use the Lockrite complete kit, i.e., with their supplied side couplers (replacement of side gears) rather than using existing side gears, but they only do 26 spline.

As I see it, ideally I need to find someone who's got a steel front axle for sale who's already done the conversion to 5.125:1 CWP, then the lockrite will go straight in.

I also need a 5.125:1 rear diff as well, as mine are the higher ratio automatic axles.

Don't really wanna get involved in building it up, so just looking to buy a complete diff assy, or complete axle(s).
