I'm planning to fit an EGT gauge to an 300Tdi motor, using a 5mm thick EGR blanking plate as the mounting point for a "plug" to be welded for the EGT sender.
I only have Mig welding for mild steel and blanking plate and plug/bung are stainless .......................... Is there anyone that can point me in the right direction to have stainless welding in north London or Essex area ?

how good is your welding? can you make it gas tight? I've welded stainless with mild wire/pub co2 with ok results, obviously the weld will rust where you introduced ferrous metal into the parts...
Before anyone criticises; I would not do this in a structural situation! I do understand the weld will end up harder and slightly more prone to cracking etc but for a simple bung I can't see a problem!

I did think about doing just that but it goes against the grain, esp'ly if someone can do it with stainless rod/wire for the price of a drink.
I know that everytime I lift the bonnet my eye will go to the rusty ring.

You can buy stainless wire for a mig. I've used it before with regular argon shield mix and it's worked very well.
If you want someone to do it for you search yellow pages or Google maps for a local fabricator and I'm sure they'll do it for you for drinking money.

There are plenty of guys around the london area that do stainless exhasuts, expect if you pop and see one of them they can tig the boss on for a few bear tokens, will only take 5 minutes

Whenever I have anything welded by someone else ive taken it to them clean and degreased, weld prepped and bolted together tight so that they just have to stick it on the fab bench and weld...
The shop near me like the part delivered on top of a box of jam doughnuts, im not sure how the technical aspect of it works but it tends to keep the price down
Remember to check the plate is still flat and will seal after welding it may pull a bit

buy some stainless mig wire ... job done.
I've also welded stainless with mild steel wire with decent results.

OK its all welded up.
There is a little more filler than i would have liked as there was a bevel on the hole and the socket is quite thin. so couldn't just run a bead without filler like i did around the inside.
Not the best picture quality the mobile don't like the shiny finish makes the workshop look like the black hole of calcutta
So its all tucked back up in a jiffy bag for tomorrows pigeon post.
