Hmmhm. Grinding noise and then the manual winder skipped and jammed. I guess the mech is rusted jammed broken, so off will have to come the door card. Anyone had to make such repairs before please ? Any tips ?

it could be a snapped cable, or more likely, the plastic pulley that the cable loops around has given up.

You'll need to take it to bits, but might be worth just finding a replacement mechanism first. it'll be more than taking the door card off, but it's not the worst job in the world.

it is quite easy to change the mechanism, mine had elec windows that did not work so I got the entire mechanism from a breaker and changed it back to winding windows.
a new handle might help as the splines wear as well

It's been a while since I did mine. You need to be able to silver solder to replace the cables. Or just get new ones! They will probably be rusty inside as well but so long as they are working.

ok, it all came out easily, the cable is not broken, but the top end plastic bush is shattered, and the cable off of the roller - I can put it back, but cant keep it there

I'll try a used one I have my eye on, if not a new kit looks to be about £50

picked up a replacement mech last weekend from Sid Smith, lubed it and fitted it today, to find that the cause of the original breakage is that the window is binding just before it is fully closed, causing strain on the mech, and the failure

... take it all apart again... Sad

You know the windows need "balancing". The hole that attach the window to the carrier are slotted to allow adjustment. It's in the factory manual on how to do it.

Yes, I assumed that and ran it up and down a few times loosely assembled to find its own position. I think I'll have to try it again. Thanks

and £3.99 of Halfords silicon lubricant later, all is well Smile

I loosened off again the bolts that hold the lower window edge onto the riser, lubed the window channels, ran it up and down a few times, then pushed the window firmly into the rear edge and tightened the bolts again

job done !

I know it's a bit to late but this may be another option although a little on the expensive side http://www.fourwd.org.uk/page3.html
