with regards gearing, a few people have mentioned wanting to lower the gearing on their vit whilst doing the diesel transplant.
is this really necessary - as the torque and low down grunt of the diesel will mean simillar power delivery at 1200rpm instead of 2000rpm in the 1.6 petrol. So by that very fact, isnt that a virtual drop in low range gearing anyway? and your high range will remain unaffected giving a usable turn of speed for motorways.

also, re the ldv box. Is reverse below 5th?
If so, then its the r380 derivative. But i think all LDVs used a derivative of the lt77 box found in most landies up to about 1995.

as far as I'm aware a couple of people have swapped out the diesel box on there commercials for a petrol box to lower the gearing. i chose to hunt down a diesel box because i wanted the slightly higher gearing so i could retain the economy on the road. but like you say with a diesel the powers low down, so it's going to perform better on the standard gearing then a petrol. i just felt that it was easier to featle way zuki intended and fettle later once I've given it some mud and seen how it behaves.

This is an excellent thread....if a little confusing with all the inputs.

Can I clarify something?

Are you using the pug engine mated toa diesel commercial gerarbox by using the £180 bell housing? Or is it to a petrol gearbox?

I really like the idea of this engine swap. Is it (don't take this the wrong way) relatively easy. It seems to be fabricating mountings and then connecting it up using that bell housing?

Thanks for any input.

Petrol and diesel gearboxes are the same (structurally, just the top gear ratio is slightly different)

My commercial has (obviously) the commercail gear ratios but i have fitted 5.12 (standard Vit diffs) instead of the Commercails 4.8 diffs. This lowers the gearing back to normal after fitting 31" tyres.

Well that's what I thought but everyone was getting so excited about that comercial gearbox that I thought I was going mad....

It seems like a fairly simple swap. Have to make plans in may i reckon.

i was lucky with mine, and found a breakers breaking a commercial. it's a shame that suzuki now charge so much for a bellhousing. and if i'm honest the difference in the top ratio is so small i dont know why they went to the trouble of making a different ratio.

redrooster also made a bell housing, but i doubt anyone could make one inc labour for anything less than the suzuki asking price. if you've got the skills to do so, or a friend who has then bonus.

has anyone who has done the pug engine conversion with a commercial bellhousing had to machine the flywheel flat?
meaning on the pug flywheel has a slight lip where as the standard vit one is flat?
my bellhousing is soon to be finished and am getting keen to get it together! trying to think of any obstacles before i get to them?!?

many thanks in advance, matt

ive made a complete bellhousing from scratch, but on my vit flywheel (not being used) the surface is completely flat.
on the pug flywheel, there is a very small lip where the friction plate runs, im concerned with a vit clutch fitted it may drag due to this lip?
i can easily have this machined down but theres been no mention of it on other builds?
many thanks matt

ive just started the conversion myself to a 1.9 N/A . all going well so far but a problem im having at the moment is the clearance between the diff nose and the housing for the clutch slave cylinder on the bell housing being so close that i would think under articulation i would be beating the bell housing with the diff nose / prob UJ . ive put on a set of shackles ( 2" ) and given me a little extra room but very little , even with some extended bump stops it will be very close depending how i set them to stop it articulating so clse to the bell housing . the diff nose looks to be at the correct angle to the transfer box also . has anyone else had this problem ? I am thinking of trying add a leafs to get more clearance again but unsure if the route to go down now ??
