someone crashed into the front of my house?
It happened again just before Xmas. Scottish Water van lost control and has caused significant damage, possibly serious structural problems.

It seems he came down the hill at speed, in poor conditions, lost control and veered into the end of the retaining wall. This flipped the van up and over on to its roof and the back of the van swiped the window.
The house is 250+ years old and what we up here call rubble or random built. The walls are 3' thick and solid stone and mortar and the stone window frame has been cracked, the lintel has been moved and there are cracks in the plaster on the inside (hard plastered - no plasterboard) tearing the lining paper. The cracks both inside and out extend over 3'.
My insurers, Aviva, are being brilliant and are arranging for builders to come out, strip back the plaster/render on both sides to see if the wall is compromised.
The pisser is, if the guy had hit the first bit of the house, which is an 'outhouse' (actually an entire empty shell of a cottage - formerly a shop) the whole thing would have needed demolished and I'd have got a cheap house extension!

Strong stuff that Scottish water - or was the driver on that other "Scottish water"?
Hope it all worked out well in the end, but it's a shame you didn't get a new extension.

Jojo - its not worked out yet. Sat with a boarded up window and debris everywhere.
As for building a big wall - if I rebuild the wall higher I'll cut the light to the front windows and risk having debris being sprayed into the house if another car hits it. I don't want anything that might tell a prospective purchaser that there has been a problem, like armco.
Current thought is to make the wall thicker and a row higher without coping stones. The idea being to direct the energy from a collision up and directing vehicles back into the road without creating debris to damage the front of the house.
I'm also in discussion with the Council about traffic calming. In principle I'm dead against simply reducing speed limits on country roads but this is a group of 5 houses with horses being led between fields several times per day, tractors and other slow moving vehicles coming out of hidden drives/gates so maybe that is the simplest option.
To be honest the problem road users are locals driving BMWs, cyclists and boy racers. Motorbikes make most noise but are sensible about riding to conditions (apart from one super fast guy that I will get hold of one day - he's a good rider but WAY too fast for our stretch). The ones I worry about most are the idiot cyclists who come down the hill at 50mph and stand no chance of stopping if I'm pulling the trailer out at 5mph.
If only people drove to the conditions and didn't get complacent .....

Its the kids who walk the horses.
I'm not really too worried about the house being hit, but this is a focal point for the Council and Police to take some action to 'encourage' all road users to drive more sensibly through our 'village'.
There have been 4 serious car crashes at my house (ie within 100m) in 6 years but several times per week, and several times a day during the lighter evenings/weekend there are close shaves. One spring evening last year I sat with my camera and counted more than 20 super speeders, dangerous overtakes and stupid behaviour but the Council/Police didn't care. Now they have to.

It is the barrier you get between carriageways on the motorway and designed to stop vehicles going through it.

I thought that ArmCo was an American gun maker.
I'm sure I saw a press release where they were backing Trump and the right to arm bears.

Glad your mum's OK.
Can't imagine what things she said, would it have been something like "Would you like to come in for a cup of tea?" or "Can I help to see you into the space?"
Any structural damage to the house? Hopfully just superficial from the pics, but the main thing is no damage to your mum.

of all the cars out there they chose to steal a SPAM, and a five door one at that. Maybe the thieves were having a family night out joyriding
pic would have looked a bit different if they'd gone for a nice BMW - it would have been in the same wall, but boot first
(glad mums ok too..)

My MkI ford fiesta had keyless entry...

No wonder it got nicked.

whats wrong with Golfs? nothing if you're talking old school... they just got fatter and uglier as time went on! Was just having a joke TBH I am a bit of a VW fan boy, got a mk1 caddy in the garage and my family have had everything from old beetles to a syncro t25 (nothing newer!!) I have moved on a bit to RWD cars though cause I fancied a bit of sideways into a lamp post action
Just got a Volvo for the Mrs...1 owner, low miles, mint 480 GT... just hoping she doesn't hit any walls

whats wrong with a SPAM.
well theres the keyless entry system.
that a 10 year old with an rf decoder can scan your key in the morning when you go to work, use a £10 cable from the internet and a £15 transponder and drive your car away the same day.

that's worrying
You don't even need it to be keyless entry to get into some! We all have a certain type of van at work and any one of us can stop another from locking their van doors if they don't pay attention. Have no idea how you'd start it afterwards, but if its just to nick their sandwiches its easy....
When you use a key fob to lock your car check the lights flash / hear it lock when you press the button!

Ik your joking I'm just messing , I am a SPAM owner my self though on a 11 plate but I'm sensible and I have a key . Dun dun dahh!!!
Don't think I fancy the keyless entry thingy , I like to get in the car even if on the off chance the battery some how managed to die. Do those cars have emergency access if the unfortunate was to happen ?

guess everyone knows aftermarket mechanical steering locks were common place years ago when door/ignition locks were crap...
....then they kind of disappeared with newer technology...
...now with newest technology I guess they'll be back, now door/ignition locks are crap.
