What is the point of a reserve price not met ? 🤔
I mean there is a starting price the seller has decided and he know's about you can't see it as a buyer and he may not tell you . So basically it's a guessing game ,
Just seems pointless .

I use a reserve price on the few times I use fleebay...
...normally I'm raising funds for an organisation so I put a cheap, but fair, reserve to try and guarantee some income.
But when I'm buying? Gits

if you go to a regular (bloke shouting) auction the start price is what the auctioneer thinks is right in relation to the reserve, and will drop it if no one bids. That doesn't happen on ebay...
I do get that if you wont sell an item for less then why reserve, just set starting price there?

But that's what I'm saying you put a reserve price on a item ,
Say example item reserve price is £50
The buyers on the auction don't see the starting price because it's reserved , someone bids £10 The reserve is not met . If I'm bidding I may think £50-£60 is my max I will not bid my highest because that would be silly I want the best price . I'd have to bid 4 more times if I bid by £10 each time to eventually know what the starting price actually is .
If you look at items in there hundreds which I have been recently it because a bigger nuisance because it could be in the value range between £100-£1000
And that makes life dam difficult .

its a weird one. last thing I tried to buy on ebay was 99p start but had a reserve.
I bidded £650 at the last second (sniper ) and 'won' it for £420, but no sale as reserve not met....
I have no idea what the reserve was, and the seller had no idea what my max was, so no way of working out if we could have come to an arrangement at all.....without talking outside of ebay, all of which breaks their rules

I take it another bid was made before you made one , making your bid highest at £420 although you bidded £650 , the reserve wasn't met because it's was higher then £650 so no body won .

yep no one won. If he'd let us know even roughly what he wanted I would have either said yep i'l buy it for that, or no im not prepared to pay that and been done with it.
The problem I've got is that IF I was REALLY close to the reserve then seller may have gone "F**k it, i'll sell it to Mike for £50 less than the reserve"....but due to ebay he'll never know what my high bid was.....

There is a way around this, And it's also what makes fleabay a bit of a pain at times. Open a second account, Look at the item your interested in and bid a ridiculous amount, it will automatically go to the reserve price met and show the bid, then retract your bid and decide if you want to buy it with your genuine account.

How do you retract a bid surely you need to contact a seller to do so , he or she might say no , and as its a legal binding contract you would have to pay it . 🤑

In the resolution centre. You have to enter a lame excuse as to why you wish to retract your bid, And make sure the auction has more than a day or so to run or your bid is binding. It's all in fleabay t&cs, If you read through it all they basically tell you how to cheat there system.

There's a thing called "second chance offer" which allows a seller to offer the item at the price offered by the next highest bidder if the reserve was not met or there are multiple identical items for sale.
On the subject of reserves and low starting prices - in my experience most people are thick as mince and totally fail to understand the whole concept behind ebay auctions. You bid the maximum you are prepared to pay, no dicking around, no "well maybe I'd go £1 higher", just bid your maximum and ebay will do the rest.
What I find odd is that people will happily bid for a car worth £000s with a starting bid of 99p and a reserve but not if it starts at £1,000!
Of course the fee structure encourages fannying around!

I've had a second chance offer a few times after a higher bidder pulled out the auction . The best way of winning auctions and I don't want to share my secrets because I bid to win , I never bid my max till the last minute , bidding your max in an auction is pointless because it gives people time to out bid you unless you bid silly money which in that case would be your Loss .
Also you want to scope that auction and pounce on it unexpectedly near the end , boom ! 😱
Where did that come from . That my friends is how you win an auction . With a few minor details I won't share your an unstoppable force . Before committing to that auction you should consider your max amount before and stick with it . It's pointless saying ahh I should have bidded that extra after the auctions end because you should have committed to that price and been happy with it .
A reserve price is a tricky one because you don't know what the starting value is , you can only hope it's what your max bid is for it but that means watching it for a week or so .

^^ last minute sniper bids FTW.
Richard, I do get the enter max bid thing and it would be great if we all put our own max at the start then never changed it at all and the auction would be won by the person who bidded highest.
But it is frustrating when you lose an auction by £1 to someone who placed multiple bids just to find out your highest bid was, and then added that £1.
If I had bidded £1 extra in the first place that would just bump the auction up by £1 (insignificant money) and I still lose...Last seconds bidding stops the norberts from bumping the price up...
I never bid more than im prepared to pay, but that £1 doesn't exactly make a difference!
Fleabay tactics...
