Hi Guys,
I'm building a jimny I have just bought. It's an 05 car, with the m13 engine.
I will be fitting a pd130 vw tdi engine from a passat, but having driven the jimny I have realised that an adapter plate to the standard transmission isnt going to cut it, as 70mph is 4k rpm.
Then I got onto remembering that the vitara has a real low crownwheel and pinion, so in turn must have a high ratio transfer box, which it does. I have crunched some numbers, and with a vitara gearbox and transfer box, and jimny 3.9 diffs running 31" tyres, I will be doing 70mph at about 2500 in 5th, while still getting a half decent low range (2krpm in low will be 7mph).
My main question, is does anyone have any measurements for how long a vitara gearbox and transfer box combo is? and compared to the jimny? I have a small body lift planned (2" max" and it is on 2" suspension lift already. Sump mods and transmission tunnel mods aren't a problem for me, I just dont want to end up with a stupidly short rear prop shaft that will end up vibrating with the angle.
Anyone ever done anything similar?
Cheers

They'll end up roughly similar, but bear in mind that the vit output to the rear axle is (almost) central, so vibrations may still be an issue without a double cardon prop.

are there different diff ratios available for a jimny? that way you could stay with an adaptor plate and keep standard t-case, cross members, mounts and props...
sounds easy when I type it

Vitara gets you a bigger clutch, and believe me, you'll need every inch of it...
TBH, if you're going to the trouble of an adapter kit (and I assume you're talking Acme?) get their toyota trans adapter and forget the suzuki stuff.
I've gotten through 3 clutches, 2 gearboxes, 3 transfer cases and many UJs!! and that's with a tuned AAZ putting out way less torque than what you're planning.

I knew about the central diff in the vitara, but I have come across a potentially easier solution in the form of a vvt transfer box which I've bought from rockwatt. Has a ratio which will work nice on road, at the sacrifice of about a 0.3:1 worse off road ratio. I have the options of either the 4.3 diffs from a vvt to restore low range or I could look at a dual transfer case using vitara stuff if it will fit in front of the jimny stuff. I need to get some measurements long term, but for now I will be ok I think.
Longevity of clutches isn't too much of a worry, I have contacts at cg motorsport who will help build a clutch that will handle the torque, or I can reduce the power output of the engine as the company I do a few bits and pieces for specialise in vw tdi's so can map it to whatever I need from the engine.
The adapter plate and all flywheel machining, engine mounts etc will be custom by me too.

Simon, if you still need the length of the gearbox and t/case I'll dive under mine and measure it tomorrow.
Like Munkee says though, you trash bits with the power, mine's just wrecked a second c.v. in as many months.

Some X90's had a gear box with out a transfercase could you not use one of those with a jimny transfer case?
Found this on e bay 301797975305
Any good?
Ash

don't buy a an un sprung clutch from CG it must be sprung unless you plan on using a dual mass otherwise it will eat its self and the gearbox output.
I run an AFN with the 16v vit clutch 31" tyres 3.54 diffs and a rock lobster.
just to add I have had no problems with a std clutch I run land rover props and only had to replace one UJ.
with that engine tyre combo and jimny diffs you better stock up on CV joints as my mate runs an AAZ we never made a full day play with out blowing a cv and he had them ringed and made no difference.
