Hi all,

I've just bought a f75 fourtrak as my first 4x4 for pay and play days.

It has a winch on the front that is wired to a three pin port on the wing that I would like to get working before I take her out;

A. I'm assuming the port is to plug the controller in to, are these standard and replaceable as I didn't get one with the car.

B. Is it possible to test the winch works before buying a new controller, maybe by bridging the pins with wire?

C. it is wired through two solenoids.... Is there a reason for having two?

Many thanks in advance, I will post a picture when I figure out how (I'm as new to forums as I am of roading[/img]

hi,

A) yes that will be the connector for the controls, no theyre not standardised but any can be made to work with any other winch.

B) Yep, but I couldn't say which wires without looking at it (in person) im afraid. I run one of the plug in controllers like you have AND a normal 12v 3 pole sprung switch wired into the cab.

C) Yes all the solenoids work together to reverse polarity to the winch and move where the positive current is sent to.

What winch is it? may help to people running the same one to give you advise on colour codes of wires....

answers .

A , that depends on the make of winch , cheaper ones tend to be different to say a , warn ,

b , you can bridge the pins to check if its working .

c , it has two solenoids , one is to feed in , the other to feed out .

try and post up a pic or two , that would help a lot with it .

B. Is it possible to test the winch works before buying a new controller, maybe by bridging the pins with wire? Yes, you need to find which is the live then bridge that between one of the other terminals - one will be out the other in

C. it is wired through two solenoids.... Is there a reason for having two? Yes, minimum required solenoids is two - one for in, one for out - both de-energised winch is stopped - top of the range winches like Warn have 4 solenoids which when all are de-energised cuts all circuits to the winch

There was another question regarding winches not long ago where I put up a diagram of how the solenoids were wired in conjunction with the winch - they have to reverse the flow of electricity through the winch and stop the winch as well - solenoids can only be on or off - it is not possible (or would be very expensive) to have an on-of-on solenoid.

Albright solenoids, and their cheap copies are in fact two solenoids in one moulded case.

Xpajun; I never thought I would ever find myself disagreeing with you but on point A, they aren't all the same! Just so the OP doesn't get the wrong part;

My warn XP has 5 wires going into a round connector (with location 'key') and previous cheaper winches have had either a three pin or round 'keyed' connector. But have come across cheaper winches with the same connector, so mine fitted but had the wires attatched differently and wouldn't work without some wire swapping to the solenoids!!

All can be made to work but buy Controller/plug as a pair an wire them in accordingly!!

All the 3 pins are the same - warn has 5 pin as standard - although mine was converted to a 3 pin before I had it and I changed it to a wireless

I didn't think before I posted that the mates truck I tried my controller on might have been wired wrong? Embarassed

at least OP knows not to buy a second hand Warn control!

Cool, thanks for your help. I'll get in with my multimeter and see what's what. Hopefully I will see a make/modle on the winch.

I had a quick look on eBay and there are wireless remotes much cheaper than wired ones, that's a bit of a surprise! Although being as the port is there, it would be nice to be able to use it.
