Ok, I did my bit and fought to find somewhere to park for less than the cost of both an arm and a leg so I could go shopping on my local high street this morning. One shop - that's all I needed to get what Mr NB wanted - I had checked the address of the shop I needed...
...but why do all the shops have identiikit plastic hoardings with NO HOUSE NUMBER ON THEM so you have no idea where you are!!!

Pubs are like this too. I have to drive to them for my job (jealous much??) and there's nothing more annoying;
White Swan, Mill Road, Cambridge.
But Mill road is 9467995(ish) houses long it seems.

And then is desperation when you try Google street view and that shows you what shops were there years ago before they all changed hands.

Years ago, when I was young and handsome, I drove lorries. Well I did quite a bit of 'rent-a-clown' work (agency driving), the delivery notes always gave the address, the postal address, however, that's not the address I want, I want the loading bay, which is round the back on a different road, and quite often is unmarked.
Now the High Street has been pedestrianised, you can't even drive the the front of the shop jump out and ask the counter staff, "Where do I deliver to?"

Our local high street is even worse, one side is all pound land the other side is all charity shops. They don't distinguish between the outlets.
That said though the council are quite progressive around here, people have been telling them for 20 years to make parking free otherwise all the shops will be lost to out of town centres. Now all the shops have closed they've made all the parking free

Which is why people avoid the High Street and go to the retail outlets with either free parking or parking reimbursed with a purchase etc.
The local council insist they need to charge parking and it's killed our High St, the local Tesco who own the retail park don't and their retail park is thriving ...

Tesco own huge swaths of land, perhaps thats the reason why they don't seem worried about a 263 million pound and other phone number size losses.

The problem with tesco is the value of the stores and land are built into the figures quoted when they say what profit they've made, now to my simple mind if they buy the food, pay their bills then sell the food for more than the cost of the food + the bills then that's the real life profit. If you bought the building for 20k and someone now tells you its worth 80k then that's irellivant, it's not real money in their pocket as they haven't sold the shop.

Aye - It's only worth what some fool will allegedly pay for it - if they can get a buyer.

I can give you an example of tesco's.I live in Darlington many moons ago they put in for permission to build a store in the town. The town centre shop owners were up in arms and offered to surrender there keys knowing the power that tesco had (this is 10 years ago nearly). The council went up to tesco's and said you can open an express size store nothing bigger.Tesco then said we own the ground your town hall is on and the huge car park next to it and the ground at the back we will build you a new town hall elsewhere and build there instead.Council didn't really know what to do.
Bringing things up to date the borough council decided to the town needed a multiplex cinema and multi storey car parks (yes really), what they thought was council land was in fact owned by tesco so the developers had to pay market rates for the ground and tesco's have done very well out of it.

I shouldn't really comment. I'm an out of town shopper, I hate going into town. Got to fight your way through the traffic, try find somewhere to park, go buy something from the nearest papershop that you don't want to get change for the machine then walk around in the rain carrying bags from shop to shop whilst being pestered by the "'scuse me mate I'm new here and got the bus into town but don't have enough money to get home..." brigade
... and now you can't even have bags, you have to push the trolley 2 miles back to your car then drive home via the scrap yard to get your 5p

Told the guy on the self checkout in Sainsburys to leave me basket alone cus I wanted to use it to carry my shopping to the car...
He wasn't too happy
Tough - they'll soon be searching their carparks for baskets as well as trollys

What gets me is that when I lived in Italy for 6 1/2 years it was normal to take your own bags or pay 5c for one. There was no fuss - which is amazing since my Italian colleagues usually get so emotional about things...

Not going to comment on this having seen supermarket baskets used for many purposes nowhere near supermarkets over the years - oh and trolleys as well

Ahhh.... but no doubt it was an Italian quality plastic bag - not a Tescos fall to bits before you get it out the door one

Last time I was in tesco I paid the 5p for the carrier bag and it was like they used to be 10 years ago. A proper size and really thick. Good value for money
Still we are saving the environment now and that's what counts. Instead of reusing free carrier bags for the various bins around the house, picking up dog muck from the garden / on walks, taking stuff to work or other people's houses etc I now buy brand new plastic bags to put in the bins around the house, pick up dog muck, carry stuff around etc.
As the saying goes reuse recycle...

Turn up at Tesco with their single-use 5p bags, and for each one you use again demand that the manager gives you a 5p discount on your shopping bill...

Twice in the past year I've been in a certain large supermarket chain's store local to me.
After collecting a trolley I've gone to their storage section and picked up one of their large 80litre clear/white bins with a lid, the ones which are ideal for storing stuff in the boot of your car or garage.
After completing my shopping, I've headed off to the checkout tills. When the checkout girl has asked me if I want any bags I've replied that I've got the bin for that purpose. OK, comes the reply, as she passes the bin down to the bagging area without scanning it...
Well, who am I go argue with the staff? Afterall, every little helps...

They just need to make the magnets around the perimeter of the car park that apply the brakes to the shopping trollies waaaaay stronger!
