Yeh the pump is turned up as per the parrot tutorial video
Getting a bit of smoke but not clouds of it - I don't think it's running lean if that's what you're thinking?
might try to take a video.
cruising along the motorway boost was about 3-5psi, and held the temp needle halfway (the correct operating temperature). The needle would rise if I held it at say 7psi for a minute

running lean is fine its if its running rich they get hot
have you got any way of upping the boost to see if that helps???

Had a bit of a read up of diesels running rich or lean, You learn something new everyday! Where as petrol engines get cooler running rich, Diesels get hotter and vice versa.
I can alter the pump but can't really adjust boost at the mo. I'm planning to modify the wastegate actuator to a threaded rod type so I can adjust it but haven't yet.
It would also help if China's finest EGT gauge was still working -buy cheap and you end up paying twice!

Can you not space the actuator out with washers like they do on Toyota surfs
I hope my Chinese gauge lasts a bit longer than yours
When yours was working what temperature do it climb to

diesels will also run hot if the timing is retarded
my old T4 VW used to run perfect but load it up would start to run hot on hills also didn't like running at 70mph 85 it was happy with no problems turned out timing was retarded so at 80ish it was on full advance so run ok below that running retarded
even though the timing belts etc was all set up ok it was not getting the full advance at lower revs
adjusting the timing on the 2.4 vw engine you have to use a dial gauge fitted into the end of the pump
i would go over your timing set it up see if all ok then adjust to pump cant remember if you move the pump towards the block or away from it to advance it it only need to be a few MM make sure you make your pump so you know the original starting point

I could do but that will only increase max boost above 12psi, it's not just getting warmer at max throttle though.
Could be wrong but I think the timing is standard. I did the timing on one when I changed the injector pump over a couple of year ago so I've got a homemade dial gauge adapter to do it, so I suppose it wouldn't hurt to check, although it's over 200miles away at the moment!

So now the weather has got colder I've put the stat back in and am keeping an eye on the temp gauge to keep it running properly.
I've bought a new water pump and some rad flush but I think I'm going to ease the fuel pump off a bit. At the moment the star wheel is wound all the way down, the pin is rotated to the widest part and the fuel screw is wound in a bit.
The diesel tank was leaking a bit so I decided to source a decent replacement rather than patch it. I got one from Crewe 4x4 for a reasonable price, they've always got Fourtraks coming in so have a great selection on parts. Nice guys too, definitely recommend them.
Just had to make a couple of minor adjustments by trimming the corners off so the new tank (right) would fit ok.
The oil seal on the steering box input shaft started weeping as well, I've had this with my previous Fourtrak and sportrak so I knew exactly how to fix it in situ which was handy.

I've sorted out the cooling issue now, it would've been nice to work through systematically and work out what had the biggest impact but I needed it done as I've been trayback-ing my friends Fourtrak so I did everything at once.
Here's a pic of the trayback if anyone's interested
[img][img/]
Anyway after reading comments here and doing more research I've realised the inefficiencies of the system and improved it as required.
Essentially I originally mounted the radiator on spacers towards the engine to fit the winch. The fans also weren't using the whole radiator area. The ducting has helped airflow at high(er) speeds at the bonnet risks circulate the air through the engine bay rather than keeping the heat in.
Here's the list
New waterpump
New thicker radiator, 3 banks of channels (2 as standard)
Rad flushed and new coolant in
Radiator shroud
Radiator front ducting
Bonnet risers
Pics of building fan shroud. I used an old Fourtrak rear door seal against the rad and it worked a treat!

Man, still working hard on the Fourtrak, and using it. Very cool! Sorry to hear about all the cooling issues. I'm glad you figured them out though. I have my 2.8TD fuel pump in my Trooper tweaked like this too. However, recently, a guy over on the Expedition portal got in touch with me and sent me a guide to systematically, and more efficiently tuning our fuel pumps. When we spin the plunger, and tighten the screw, we increase fuel flow thru the pump at all times. Thing is, the motor doesn't need that much fuel all the time. So, this guide mentions some other tricks to modding your fuel system so that you get the power you want more efficiently. Unfortunately, I can't load the doc to the forum, but if you would like to look over the document, just sent me pm, and I can email you the doc.
Keep up the work on the rig. It's looking super cool!

Looks good but...
that cowl or shroud you made and fitted is only going to do one thing and that is to allow the corners of the radiator fill with mud
