At 7:30 this morning a lovely delivery man handed me a very heavy package! What was in the box you ask? Take a look for your selves.

Yes that is a turbo kit for a 16v vitara Very Happy can't wait to start fitting it!

The kit comes with a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. This will be alright for up to 6/7psi and I'm Ganna knock back the timing a few degrees. I've been speaking to some one up north and he is using a microsquirt so that is a possibility.

Yeah I think fuel injection will get much better results than carb.
I have a friend here who has a 1.6 engined 106 used for drag racing.
He started on bike carbs, then went turbo SU and could never getting it running quite perfect, and since going injection he says he won't go back.
Im probably going to go for supercharger (not a DWR kit) and I think injection is the only way to go

Oh definitely! You'll get a lot more control with injection. For now I'm not going for big power so will be okay with the fuel regulator, but in the future I may want to go bigger in which case all I need is something to control timing(microsquirt), and an intercooler Very Happy

Which ECU have you got? the Denso or the Mitsubishi? I have something in the works for the Mitsu ECU.

I just had a look and could see no obvious markings on it, it's behind the drivers dash speaker? Any other ways I could tell them apart?

That's the one. PM me your VIN and I'll look it up on the parts database.

So I started the fitting today!

You should start with something like this

Remove all the intake stuff

Then the exhaust manifold

Then have a cheeky test fit Very Happy

Then remove the rest of the exhaust, I'll be making my own for this.

Then that's as far as I got tonight, I will be finishing tomorrow hopefully so will update again!

Rhinoman, what have you got in the works for a turbo? The main thing stopping me doing turbo is the engine management.

How much was the DWR kit? Does it include everything? Anything else to have to buy?

Anyone know how well the G engines cope with turbo? They were never designed for it.

The Kit was about £850, then there was postage of about £50 and import tax of £250! You'll need to buy a couple of 3mm T pieces, and some silicone couplers as I think the U.S. Vitara is slightly different than the one we have, I still have to order some hoses but I've got it working with a few... Creative bodges Razz You'll also need to make an exhaust as its only supplied with a down pipe. Luckily I had a few I could cut up to make mine. The car seems to be accepting the boost done so far, I'm running a little lean as my lambda sensor is actually missing half of its self so the real test will be when that arrived Smile

Sammy, will you be able to show us how you did the missing bits so I don't have to go thru that myself?

I'd still be keen on Rhinoman's ECU solution because he's very thorough and knows the theory well, whereas other solutions just try to get it to work as easily/cheaply as possible.

It's all very tempting!

The import tax isn't that bad because you didn't pay VAT on the export and if you'd bought it in the UK you would have paid VAT instead. Assuming the seller didn't charge VAT, but most countries you don't pay vat on exports.

Beg to differ...

If you pay an import duty you will also pay VAT - often you will pay VAT without the duty - rarely you won't pay either

In the above case I'm guessing about £60 duty - £50 shipping and the remaining £190 is VAT

Of course! As best I can anyway Smile I've been speaking to rhinoman and will more than likely be contacting him again when I'm looking for more power as I will need something to control timing.

After 2 weeks of being lost at the yodel depot 1.5 miles from my house because they couldn't find my house I finally received this!

A 60-51mm silicone reducer to go from throttle bodies to... Well I suppose intake pipe?

Any way it replaces this

To look like this!

Much better wouldn't you say? Now just to figure out why it's still running lean, I'm thinking a blocked fuel filter because it does look like it's ever been changed Razz

Been talking with DWR about this kit having read this thread. Thinking I might be ordering one.

Have you driven it with the kit on? Does it help much with low down grunt?

I've already got a custom stainless exhaust cat back... are you keeping the stock cat?

I'm tempted by the kit as well, just want a decent engine management system for it.

Yes I've been driving it with the kit, it does make a difference on the low end as the turbo spools up fairly quickly, it starts coming on boost at around 3000 rpm but below that, I don't know, it may just be the extra noise of my exhaust but it definitely feels better. And the only parts for the exhaust provided are manifold and downpipe, so I cut up some old bits of exhaust and made my own. It's not very good mind you 😂, but it will do, I currently don't have a cat as the stock one would be too small and would be a bit of a restriction so I'm looking into sports cats but they are £££.

I'm thinking to get this kit as well. In fact I might go for two of them, one for my Vitara and one for my buggy build!

Lol! See I'm curious, depending on how it changes power delivery, if it opens up options on live axle conversions based on available diff ratios... without necessarily having to mess around with sammy transfer case swaps and/or dropping a bigger engine in... Feels like by the time you've change the transfer case, different engine, and then different axles you've not got so much vit left over... so why start with one (other than to do something different)... whereas enhancing whats already there, and then a live axle conversion in my head feels like I'm retaining enough vitara. I'm running 5.12 diffs at the moment with 31" tyres... but I've still got a 4.88 rear diff somewhere - so I could test it with the hubs left unlocked... patrol 2.8TD's run 4.625 diffs... landy axles seem to accept 4.75 ratios. Might still be looking at transfer case gear reduction to make it really do the business off road. But if high range remains useable due to the extra oomph could make a for a cool little truck.

So... I've ordered the kit! First things first though! Give it a go...

Can't wait to see what you think, atleast your still keeping a light engine. Personally I'm not a huge fan of turbos as your for ever trying to keep in the rev range but I can't wait to see what you think!

Do you need to alter the fuelling or can it cope? Guess you can't really alter the compression!

Have you considered a supercharger? I would've though it would give you a more linear increase?
