Crumbs, it's gone a bit quiet in here?
So as you may know Team Idris started life as a Robot Wars team that ran a pub meet in the midlands from 2000-2005. Then we changed direction back to off-roading and re-worked the Beast, taking Team Idris into a world of winch challenge. I started competing in 1987 and we expect to get a few more years out of our 1972 rangy. But I am off on another tangent from the usual trains and 4x4's and this time it's writing. So please enjoy a lounge about listening to one of my works read by someone who voices quite a bit better than I do. You're never too old to do what the hell you feel like

Have to be on Netflix for me to watch it - don't do any other TV - not worth the licence fee

I tried not having a licence for a while.
Even though I really didnt have a TV, I got so much grief from the license people that it was almost worth paying to make them go away.
When Mrs Dunc moved in she wanted a TV, mainly because otherwise her kids wouldn't visit, so she started paying for a licence.

i legally haven't had a licence for three years now.
i get no grief from them as i threatened them with court action for harassment. no letters, no visits, nothing. contrary to popular belief it is quite legal to own a tv and not have a licence.
but no doubt someone will start moaning that this topic has been done to death....
just like the "what size tyres will fit" question has......

I was told that at the time, and I was just about to take up the harassment argument with them, when Mrs Dunc decided that she wanted to get a TV, and hence a license.

two legal terms.
removal of implied right of access.
cease and desist notice.
like i said, i do have a tv, but dont watch live tv. the kids use netflix, or torrents and sky catchup. it is also linked to the pc so we can watch downloaded content that way.
they did try their luck after i cancelled it but i informed the guy he was breaking the law and he apologised and removed himself from the property.
that was three years ago.
i`m due a letter soon to ask if my circumstances have changed ( they aint) and that will be it for another three years.

If the very nice gentlemen say to you “I’ll get a search warrant”. I would smile sweetly and say “Do carry on, old chap!”.
I’ve signed countless “Rights of Entry” warrants, and more than a few “Search Warrants”, but I’ve never signed one for TV licencing.
If the Police are too busy to turn up for a burglary, then I’m quite sure that they are not interested and would only turn up for TV licencing to “Keep the Peace”.

there has also never been a successful prosecution using evidence from a detector van....
there are a lot of mistruths bandied about to scare people who legally dont need a licence into buying one.

The only weapon in their armory are the continual threatening letters.

I could be completely wrong, But my understanding is you only need a license to watch live broadcast. It doesn't matter where its comming from,
ie tv, net ect.

Netflix you don't as it doesn't show any live programmes 4OD I suspect is the same unless it shows live TV - that is any programme that is received at the time of broadcast.
teamidris' link above is a youtube link which is not being received at the time of broadcast so you can watch in on your TV without a licence

you only need a licence if you watch "live" or "nearly live" broadcasts.
the nearly live bit hasnt been tested in court yet but i suspect pausing sky for 5 seconds wouldnt count.
i just use good old fashioned illegal torrents instead....

The BBC are pushing to change the live TV rule as they feel it is out of date with current trends. Ie they're losing money.
I think it's 50 50 whether they'll get it or loose the license fee. Lol

Yeh, I'm all like; "ooooh, that's a too many posts to be a good thing,"
Luckily you only hate the BBC and not my wordsmith skill, so no worries
To be honest I don't know why I'm paying the TV or Sky? I hardly switch it on and the two are quite a cost per month. YouTube is full of stuff and there's fun to be had directly adding your own content (my recent vlog) or working with someone else. (Or five). Another one I wrote this year has done 8000 views in a month and that's a better feel factor than the BBC's happy smiley news 24!

Possibly.
But then I don't watch any other free to view terrestrial channels because in my opinion they show a lot of dross which cater for the hard of thinking. The only Freeview channel I watch regularly is Film4, which is partly funded by TV licence payers. The rest of the Freeview channels mostly show repeats.
I will also agree that the BBC show a lot of dross; but they also produce and show a lot of good quality tv and radio programmes. Would they be able to to that if they had to tout for advertisers? Maybe. Maybe not.
I don't have Sky; firstly I don't see why I should subscribe and still have to watch adverts. And secondly from the little bits of Sky programming I've seen when visiting friends, the quality is not much better than ITV or Channel 5...
If the TV licence fee is scrapped, how much revenue will Channel 4 lose?

i only have sky as its cheaper to have the package than just the internet.
i couldnt comment on the dross bit as i dont watch telly, but from what i remember, top gear was one of the only things i used to watch......
then that got boring.

I couldn't watch top cat. When he was trying to get Benny to pretend he was extra ill so he could chat up the fit nurse I exceeded my 'cringe' limit
