I've just joined this forum so thought I'd drop in and say hello! Some of you might know me from other forums (I tend to use the same username, as my memory is pretty poor!).
Before I could drive I wanted a Land Rover, but once I past my test (a decade ago) I realised that the insurance made it a no-hoper!
After a few years of motoring, I decided I was in a position to buy a 4x4, but couldn't afford to buy a Landy by then. I was drawn towards the older Toyota Hilux, but due to Top Gear even the rotten farm hacks were selling for a grand!
I struck lucky on eBay and bagged a 1989 Bedford Brava 4x4 2.2D (No.8 ), for about £500:
I didn't get round to doing much off roading in it, but did love driving it, 4WD/RWD selectable is my favorite setup. It got used as a work hack, and put up with two crashes before I sold it for export as the piston rings were too worn out!
With the money from that, and a small amount of savings, I bought my first Land Rover!
Originally I wanted a Series II or III, 88" pickup, 2.25D, like one my dad used to have. But usability directed me towards a long wheelbase. I then decided that really I needed a full width tailgate, otherwise it wasn't much use as a work truck, which narrowed the search down to a HCPU (high capacity pick up).
Finally, I decided a 'Defender' would be more sensible, due to the availability of parts.
So my first Landy was a 1985 Land Rover One Ten (No.10), HCPU, with a Discovery 200Tdi engine fitted:
However, due to returning to full time education, and financial limitations, I ended up laying this old girl up.
I did end up buying another couple over the years as well, the projects that never happened! Lack of time was the main reason, work commitments and the like.
1980 Series III lightweight (No.18 ), 88", 2.25P:
I got it into my head one day that I really wanted a lightweight, having never liked them before. After a lot of searching and going to view lemons, I finally bagged this one. I slightly regret not getting it on the road, as it means I've not got it out of my system, but I know I would have used it once down a nice sunny greenlane with the top off, and then sold it anyway, as it was a petrol!
1968 Series IIa (No.24), 109", 2.25D:
This one I REALLY regret selling. I wanted to do a full rebuild, and put the front back to how it should be. My plan was to have this old diesel as my daily runaround, use it for camping weekends away, etc. Unfortunately it had to go as I couldn't keep it stored where it was.
A few months ago, I realised I needed a hobby again, as I haven't had one for a good few years. I decided to take up greenlaning again.
In the absence of a road-ready 4x4, my daily hack was the only choice. So my current daily hack and greenlaner is.....
a 1993 Vauxhall Astra Mk3, 1.4 petrol, front wheel drive (don't shoot me, please!):
It's on oversized wheels / tyres, 2" taller than standard (so adds 1" of lift all round), and as you can see they are an AT / mild-MT type pattern.
The back end is also raised a further 2" with longer springs. (So 3" lift on the back in total).
I just need to lift the front another inch and I'll be happy.
I still own my first Landy (the black One Ten), it currently resides on my brothers driveway. He is moving away in the next couple of months and although he has said he'll take it to his new place, I've decided to try and get it back on the road!
New fuel tank should arrive this week, but I've got a long list of other jobs to get done on it!

We have a magic word in the world of Difflock, try inserting the word "kitchen", somewhere into the comment...

I knew a bloke who really did have a real left-handed screwdriver. It was a specially modified rachet screwdriver made to click fit on to his artificial left hand which was a "Captain Hook" grippy clicky hooky thing. He lost his hand in WW2 and that was the sort of thing they gave you in those days. He also had a right handed hammer though which he used to call Percy (short for persuader). Strange that as everyone else called it a "Mer".

Nah - they're disabled cuz they ain't 'images' - yes I know they are, but the forum BBCode doesn't recognise them as images - image locations have to end with the .jpg .gif .png tags
P.S. don't mention Kitchen unless you like flashy forums

Also I think it might be because they are an https rather an http. I normally upload direct from the PC (hoping the resize on the website works) or use pixresizer first.
(welcome by the way)
