We chased to much rust out in the donor body and i wasn't happy with the way it was starting to look, so I've since invested in Bendtech pro and designed my own body. At Christmas we pulled off the first body and scrapped it and started work on bending up the new one, at the moment that is as far as I've got atm, been busy finishing long term customer project work, hoping to get mine back across in the next couple months to finish constructing the body.

I appreciate that there is some rivalry between the Suzuki fraternity, and the land-rover fraternity.
however, I have had and built both, land-rovers.... well I lived in one for 6 months, in a war, bought one myself after it and found out that paying the fuel bill myself wasn't so much fun.
Suzuki sj series, well lets be honest, the chassis is Santana (aka Spanish land-rover) but the body work in the tradition of the Datsun Cherry continues, I have toyed with the idea off a swb 88 on a vit chassis, call me a perv if you wish but it should work, with a few chops.
so i have no idea as to why you used the vit body, however I did learn a lot from the thread and I am grateful for everything you showed us, plus I took a few tips from the wielding (self taught myself).
I think everyone would like to know what happened.
before you answer take consultation from the fact that I started building a land-rover hybrid between a series III lwb and an efi range rover vogue,
I did all the work and the body fell off the lift... twisted and I walked away from off roading for 4 years!

TBH, what i found is that after cutting back the rust we were left with too little body and everything became a compromise, the other issue been that a land rover body is designed to sit on a land rover chassis, as where the smaller vitara body would have to sit on top. This did end up with the wholetruck looking to tall. it got to the point that i no longer liked the look of it.

After a lot of discussion it was decided to go back to the drawing board, I would pull inspiration from the defender body as they were designed to fit the chassis. All along i have wanted to make sure the the end result was a vehicle that can be used for fun at the weekend and still be put to work through the week.

Armed with a lot more experience welding and designing roll cages (which we hadn't when we started) and some new design software I designed a tubular body, back at Christmas we started on building up this body, unfortunately I didn't get as far as hoped, and I am now waiting for some free time to get it back in the work shop to build up the main body so that i may start on the fitting of all the many parts that go together to make it usable.

The hope is to come up with a design that we can reproduce for our customers once were happy that it is right. just need the spare time to complete it as paid work has to come before personal projects.

my advice to anyone thinking of trying to do what i orginally started out to do it 'KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid' its very easy to get drawn into a long project, its also just as easy to loose interest when it takes so long.

The problem with the land rover, or the lack of problem if you will, is that four panels make a whole front end that looks okay. That's why there are so many tube buggies that look like a 110. I did it with the rangy chassis; main hoops go in, weld on brackets, hang bonnet & wings, angle iron frame rear, a few spats and doneski!

your not wrong there, like you say landrover style paneling is easy, trying to make front and rear paneling which will look nice against a vitara body however is not, we tried lots of different things and which ever way didn't look right. by keeping it simple the advantage is now all panels expect bonnet will be flat and easily replaced if damaged beyond repair.
