It would have been something like £100 fine, however, he decided not to take the fixed penalty, so he had his day in court, or not as he couldn't be bothered to turn up.

The magistrates listen carefully to his comments in the court (which as he couldn't be bothered to turn up weren't very loud), and with his contribution decided on the level of fine.

The ostrich method of problem solving doesn't work well with the Courts...

What's the criteria for being in the middle lane too long? Is it a certain amount of time that you could pull in but don't or?

If your doing 60 and don't pull in between 2 lorries there has to be an acceptable amount of time? It's one of my real bugs but there must be some guidelines? If I'm towing I try base it on the driver I'm holding up. If it's a rep in an audi I will pull into a small gap as I know they'll be on and past, if it's a dodderer in a picanto I'll stay out otherwise they just sit on your back end and you get stuck behind the next truck.

There isn't a specific guideline but the advice is that if you can pull in between the slower vehicles, leaving approiate braking distances and pull out again to overtake the next vehicle without needing to slow down, nor cause others to slow down then you should move in.

Unfortunately most people seem incapable of correstcly estimating the relative speeds involved - or are just fannies.

Only a fool breaks the two second rule. If you stick by that guideline you'll spend most of your time in the middle lane.

It doesn't help that people keep speeding up and slowing down on the motorway. The number of times your chugging along with the cruise on and someone speeds up as your over taking her them leaving g you stuck in the outside lane is scary. Then you get the grief from Mr audi.

Nonsense. I spend half my driving life on the motorway and with a little forethought and half decent timing I have little or no problems - as long as I'm not near Manchester/Liverpool or London.

When towing this is the bane of any journey. I'm on cruise control at 60mph and I continually get overtaken then have to pull out again to pass the same idiot often 5 or 6 times. What is worse are the people who speed up a little as you overtake until you are past them then they slow by 5mph.

I get it the other way - chugging along at 67 (for some reason my cruise control won't go above this magic number) I know I'm creeping up on the vehicle in front so I need to overtake but there's a car overtaking me, it's sped up to me but instead of going past it's now sitting on my rear quarter matching my speed - until it sees my brake lights when he puts his foot down and accelerates away

We need minimum speed limits like they have in many other countries.

The one that really used to bug me when I was lorry driving is you would be flat out at 56 on a 2 lane motorway and pull out to pass a car. You spend what feels like an eternity to get 3/4 of the way past them then they just randomly speed up. Usually as they've just finished their text and realised they're no longer doing 80mph. You then pull back in after passing nothing and get the few cars that were behind you showing you their parkinsons wrist or brake testing you.

I find most drivers speed up on a down hill and slow down on an up hill so once you've realised that you can often use it to your advantage.

It's not limited to motorways, I had an old boy pull out infront of me in a Skoda on a 40 dual carriageway. I sat behind him for a while at 30 waiting for him to speed up but he didn't so I moved over to pass him. I looked in the NS mirror to check I was past to pull in and he was still there. I sped up and looked, he was still there, I sped up and looked, he was still there. I daren't speed up any more so drove for a while with him next to me. Eventually I caught up some cars in the OS lane so slowed, he under took the lot of us. I moved back to the LH lane as I needed to be in that lane for a roundabout. After the RB is was a single lane, still 40, I was behind him again and he drove at 30 again, randomly braking then speeding up.

He must have been in his 70s, I really wanted to ask him what I had done to annoy him as I really couldn't see where I'd gone wrong so I came to the conclusion that his viagra hadn't worn off.
