Thanks for reading, hopefully some of those who get past the rambling will be able to assist!

Having got rid of my last 4x4 3 years ago I've had a Saab (which had been bodged) and a mk4 Mondeo. The time has come to consider an estate again and my personal preference would be a 4x4 again so I can have a little weekend fun. I noticed my local BP sells LPG at 50.9ppl which got me thinking. I've had an LPG vehicle before, a 1999 Ford Explorer, so I've got a bit of an idea and started looking on the net to see what vehicles are available that are converted already. My budget is likely to be £3500-4000, whatever I get for my Mondeo basically so I can't justify having to keep back £1500-2000 to pay for a conversion myself.

This is where my problem lies. Most sellers, not being the one who had the vehicle converted, have no idea what type of system it is. My current shortlist consists of mainly Jeep Cherokees and P38 Range Rovers, with a few oddballs like a Subaru Outback. Obviously, I need to rule out single- point systems completely. My Explorer had a single point system and backfired quite regularly until it blew the air filter housing apart! Knowing that I could get myself a Range Rover is very tempting but I wouldn't want any modification that's likely to affect the already sensitive Range Rover. Should I therefore rule out NON-sequential multi-point systems as well?

Most of the candidates are over 50 miles from me and not in the same direction but it's looking like the only sure fire way to determine the system is to go and view the vehicle. I can identify a single-point system from experience but it looks like the visual differences between sequential and non-sequential are limited, are there any points in particular that would help with identification?

As I said, a bit of a ramble but hopefully someone can offer some advice and wisdom.

Andy

Shouldn't the insurers know which kit is fitted?

Insurers only care about your declaring LPG is fitted - the exact system is irrelevant to them.

My advice is to get a good test drive in any car you like the sound of and if it runs properly and nicely then it's a good one, hopefully.

Veg oil isn't really an option as I can't find a reliable source firstly but also I'm looking for a vehicle with a bit of poke and a bit of comfort as my daily round trip is 82 miles of mainly A roads. I don't think a Fourtrack or a Musso would give me what I'm after as an every day vehicle.

I'd hoped I could find system type from the LPG register but it just states whether the vehicle is registered, I assume this is the information that insurers see.

Visually it's very easy.

With a multipoint system a photo of the top of the engine will show the pipework and injector blocks. A single point will be missing all of this. There will be a block sitting on the injector side of the engine with a bank of solinoids with a pipe going to each inlet track on the manifold.

Any system fitted in the last 10 years should be multipoint. The BP close to here also does a 10p discount per L for regular customers, I pay 45p/L. Wouldn't even think about bio at that price.

Doesn't really matter what system, just make sure you get hold of the correct lead from tinley tech for plugging into a laptop for self diagnosis. LPG is a very simple system if you can read the fault codes.

I've currently got a 4.7 Jeep WJ. Does the same as around 35mpg on gas, leaves SPAM gti's for dust, pulls 3.5 without batting an eyelid. Very cheap to buy too.

Well, I've gone and got myself a WJ Grand Cherokee 4.7 with multipoint. I found I could get 3 or 4 years newer and with more kit than a similarly priced Range Rover.

Let the fun begin!
