I've got a G reg 110 county and looking to replace the (possibly) original tubed 5.5 steels. Either with tubeless 5.5 white steels or a set of wolfs.

I'm now lurking up in Harrogate so simmonites seem to be the closest place for me.
http://simmonites.com/wheel.htm
Called up a couple of times and it seems they only do an exchange service for the standard 5.5 steels which suits me fine. Couldn't get any info on the wolfs they offer (need to speak to mark apparently but he wasn't around)

Searching around on here I couldn't find any posts with much info on simmonites (if I've just been inept at searching please point me in the right direction cheers).

Anyone got experience of their refurbed wheels?

I'm assuming the wolfs they offer aren't OEM. Again anybody got a set of wolfs from them in the past?

Any advice appreciated

cheers
ian

An exchange wheel will only be as good as what condition the wheel was before it was refurbished.90's or 110's could be fitted with either NRC7578 which are riveted together, or ANR4636 which are welded together. The ANR4636 would be the one to go for as there is less chance of rust building up on the inside (where the tube is fitted) of the wheel. There are lots of the new tubeless rim for sale on Ebay as a tyre anything wider than 7.50R16 will require wider rims so people buy alloy wheels and sell the old set, you could probably get a set for around 200 pounds + carriage..As for Wolf rims one disadvantage of them is that they are made of heavier/thicker grade of steel on the hub face which will leave the wheel nut unable to go the full length of the stud, they usually finish a couple of threads short.Early military LR's fitted with wolf rims had the wheel nut torque increased to 170nm to lessen the chance of them coming loose. If you go for tubeless 5.5 inch wide factory rims the part number is RRC503600,you can buy them new for 60 pounds each + carriage, the Wolf rim to go for has the part number ANR4583PM and are around 50 pounds each + carriage so before you go down the refurb route price everything up first.

Thanks mr tyre.

I spoke to simmonites and thought I'd pass on what they said.

They do have refurbed tubeless 5.5 steels which they can sell for less than brand new 5.5 steels as long as you have similar (ie tubeless) wheels to exchange. They didn't have any tubed ones so wouldn't accept mine as exchanges. They did offer that £45 per wheel could refurb mine which I think I might still consider in the future. I've not had parts stripped and re-painted before so I don't know whether that's a reasonable price. Presumably they get them sand/bead blasted and powder coated.

They also sell new 5.5 steels and the full 2200kg rated wolf (not OEM) style rims.

I don't really really want to end up with 2 sets of 5.5steels so probably won't get some newer tubeless 5.5steels from ebay. Also as I don't need the 2200kg rating simmonites wolf's have I might go for some cheaper wolf style rims (maybe from Paddocks).

Cheers,
Ian

Ian you could have a look at:

Able Blast Cleaning
Bungalow Deighton Grange
Boroughbridge Road
Deighton
Wetherby
West Yorkshire

jc@blast-clean.com

01765 603149

45 quid a wheel sounds like a lot of money.

Taken the wheels to Able blast cleaning and they seem a decent place.

They've asked for a RAL or BS paint code so I'm trying to find out what white I should use. If anyone can help I've started a separate thread here:
