Not that I'm seriously considering buying one, this is for intellectual exercise only.

If you had a D4 and wanted to fit decent A/T tyres on less scratchable wheels what would one suggest? My 110 Defender has Continental conticross tyres which do rather well.

If you went for something on 18 inch then you have 255/60R18 General AT on 7.5x18 L322 Range Rover alloys, as most people upgrade from 18 inch to 20 inch on the 322.

The version on 17 inch rims comes on 235/70R17 you can get modulars in 7Jx17 and 5x120 but they come from Oz and aren't cheap. As for tyres Cooper do a Discoverer AT3 in that size.

Post resurrection given I've now bought a D4.
Looking for good All Terrains for light field/winter use but on the standard alloys because I can't be bothered changing wheels all the time.

Ideally 70% on road 30% off road and give good mileage (ie not changing them every 20k miles) .... any recommendations?

Grabber AT, but they are more 60-40 to me. OE I would like to see any make get much more than 20k miles out of tyres on them.

And disc pads and discs.

Oh dear, I was ignoring the additional running costs Embarassed

I suppose changing brakes is not so difficult that I can't do it myself?

UK wide i 'look' after 223 D4's.Tyres last between 7.5 to 11.5k miles dependent on drivers, the V8 'specials'tend to take them down to 1.6 at the 7.5k mark.If you look at 10-12k for pads, anything more is a bonus,at the third set of pads do the discs as well, may be earlier depending on usage. Some of the earlier ones are polybushed all round now the rear anti roll bar bushes are the first to go.

Be gentle pulling the brake sensors apart they were fitted one on the osf the other on the nsr and get a bit crispy with age.

I can see myself keeping a stock of pads Wink

Given LR want £175 to do an axle of defender pads I'd hate to think how much they'd want for a D4!

How much do pads cost?

They vary Richard a lot.If it's a 2.7 TDV6 fronts start around 30 quid for the front 40 quid for Ferodo. Genuine for the 3.0 start around 60 quid front 75 quid rear going up 115 quid front 75 quid rear, dependent on chassis number and suspension set up.

Damn, they don't come cheap.

It's a 13 plate 3.0 8 speed. I'll try for a bulk buy deal. I usually buy Mintex but that's because I can usually get a decent price on them and the 110 stopped well on them.

I wonder if Haynes have done a manual yet Surprised

What you can get for them is down to a certain extent to chassis numbers, and what suspension set up you have, these are some of the chassis numbers where changes happened:
AA 547440
BA 596157
CA 999999

Before now Delphi,Ferodo,EBC,Lockheed and Genuine parts have been used.
The plan of attack would be wait until it needs some pads and then put something in, rather than bulk buy to find out what make you have give better mileage than i have quoted you for.
