Well it's been a wee while since I've updated this, main reason for that being I've not done much lately.
I've managed to pull my finger out today and crack on a bit.
The first axle is looking much healthier now. The top and bottom mounts are on both side and I've got the camber/castor angles I was aiming at. The brakes fit well under the wheels and have full contact with the pads.
I couldn't resist the temptation to fit some wheels on it and see what it looked like.
From the diff cover to the floor is 16" with my 32" alligators on. This is more than I was expecting to be honest. Think I've squeezed a little more angle out of the shafts. There is room for switching the hubs around slightly if it's a little to much but hopefully they'll be fine.
I've started tacking up the second axle. I've got about as far as I can until I get the steering rams back. I can't mount the diff in until I know how much room they're going to take.
The triangles won't be long behind that. Again I'm waiting for the steering rams to arrive before I can finalise the plans for these as I need to cut holes for the rods to pass through.[/img]

Again it's been a wee while - I've been pretty busy trialling with Screamer and getting it prepped for KOV. Unfortunately that's not left me much time to progress with this.
Anyway - the second axle is also tacked up now. I've had to break down the first one to better align it as I made a slight oversight the first time. I've made up the first triangle and I think it's looking good.
Since taking the photos I've changes the Ballistic joint mount. I wasn't happy relying on 3mm box section so I've made some 5mm plate mounts instead.
I intend on making the two triangles the same and once that's done I can make up the main body mount for the axles. This will determine the wheelbase which I'm going to up from Screamers 95" to more like 98"-99". This is because I haven't encountered any problems with maneuverability in the UK's normal trials, but I think climbing could be improved by being a little longer.
I bought the Ballistic mounts to go with the joints so it should be pretty straightforward to join the two together. Then the fun bit - chassis!

Made some progress since the last post.
I've made the second axle triangle and tacked all that up. Both are looking good now. I've beefed up the ballistic mounts as described in the last post. These are now both complete although they will need extra bracing to the triangle.
More excitingly (in my opinion :p ) I've now started the chassis. I'm using the bend tech software to give me the bending instructions and my god it makes life easier. It's really worth every penny when doing anything remotely complex. My chassis is made of 2 rails which are a mirror of each other, and just to make it a little more taxing, they slot together - not something I would of been happy tackling before. But now...
First rail:
Nose section (this was actually the first part I bent up before the much more complicated chassis rails):

Now butted up properly and tacked. Engine also in position slightly off center. This is to straighten up the props slightly and give room for a fuel tank and other gubbins down the left hand side:

I'm reasonably happy with the engine position both laterally and longitudally. I've got much more room in the driver seat, mainly down to the longer nose. The engine is almost central so weight distribution should be good.
This time I'm going to fit the radiator/oil cooler in the rear middle to give better visibility and made ducting cold air during speed events much easier. I might also be able to fit a bigger rad than I have bought which is always good.
Anyway, next I need the rear engine mount in which will hold the engine steady. The front mount will sit on top of the ballistic mount rail. I've done the mounts first as it's much easier to do with it all sat on the floor. Next I'll mount the ballistic rail on which will dictate body position in relation to the wheels. I'll be pushing it all as far forward as I can - this will be dependent on approach angle and air shock mounts.
I should (finally) be picking my steering rams up Tuesday so I can get on and mount them, some steering arms and eventually the diffs. The axles can then be welded up.
Can't wait to get the chassis sat on the axles

The ballistic joints are shown in the second post of this thread. Previously I've used weld on category 2 tractor joints. They work fine and are pretty hardy but the knocking they make when they've worn a little do my head in.
The ballistics are fully rebuildable and fitting new bushes is easy peasy. They also give a very similar amount of travel.

I've made some progress since the previous post. Now Eurotrial and KoV are passed I can concentrate on getting on now.
So, the chassis is welded together and it all fits quite nicely. The nose section is on to.
Once that was welded up I've attached the ballistic mounts and got it all sat there with the axles under. With the wheelbase set I got on the case of positioning the motor. This was largely dictated by the props - mainly the rear. Using the standard shaft (worst case) I've got it in about the optimum position whilst still leaving a comfortable cockpit. If I have problems I can get a shaft made up that will allow a longer rear prop.
I've started on the controls. The gear selector is in and fits nicely. I've fitted the master cylinder with a clutch slave cylinder to hopefully allow me to mount all that low and out the way. It's a heavy and awkward lump so I didn't really want it on the dash.
The radiator is also fitted. I've gone for a much bigger rad this time as I had a few heating issues during KoV. It's a 50mm core and bigger overall. That coupled with a 19" fan I don't think I'll have any issues in the future. It's also mounted much more in the open rather than in the bodywork like Screamer 1.
I'm going to try and complete the controls as the next job really then it could be the rest of the cage.
I'm also waiting on a load of clevis's to match my 3/4" rose joints. Once I have them I can fit the steering rams and panard rods. I can then finally finish off the axles.

Thanks very much. Well I was hoping for the end of this year but unless things go exceptionally well I can't see that happening. Certainly within the first few months of next year though as I intend on it being thoroughly tested before the start of the nationals next year.
I'm using 'bendtech PRO'. Excellent program to be fair. Cost about £130 or so I think it was. Decided as I was using CDS it might save wasting too much tube messing around. It's done exactly that as well as making the actual bending process 10 times easier. I'd highly recommend it to anyone doing a reasonable amount of tube work.
Right then, after reading through the MSA, Ultra4 and Eurotrial rules, I've decided I need a diagonal in the main B-Pillar. I was hoping to get away without this as it's going to be tight past the engine. Unfortunately it's required for U4 though so it's got to go in. I've also enquired as to whether I can do a triangle in the roof instead of a diagonal. It looks like that won't be a problem so that's what I'll do. It's only really to gain a little bit of head room. I'd have enough with a diagonal, it's just theres more like this. It also should make the roof panel better looking (hopefully).
So, design modification with diagonal + roof triangle.

Well it's been a long while since my last update. Hopefully some of you have been following my progress on the Screamer Offroad facebook page, but for the others, this is where I am...
Screamer 2 is up and running and already covered 2 national rounds at Slindon 2 weeks ago. Time was pretty short for final assembly as I was waiting for my mini-spool to go in the gearbox before I could put it all together. An extremely busy few days and it was tested round the yard and loaded up on the Saturday night ready for round 1 on the Sunday.
Here she is in probably the cleanest condition she's ever likely to be in!
So the final spec in the trial gear:
Honda 3.0lr V6 Vtec.
2 link suspension front and rear.
Custom live axles giving 19" of diff clearance.
Fox 14" air shocks all round.
40" Trepador stickies.
Custom 17" beadlocks.
Full independent, hydraulic 4 wheel steer.
Front and rear difflocks.
So the first round went very well. The first time the truck saw dirt was section 1. There were a couple of hairy moments in the morning before I tweaked the suspension a little to make it a little more stable. After that, I had 1 tyre go flat and pushed off the rim in the afternoon. Overall though only little niggly problems which caused me no serious issues. With a steady day I ended up winning round 1. Not bad for the first day out! I think chuffed is the word!
Round 2 went well as well with the truck performing flawlessly. The only issue I had was some foolish driving and passing a gate 2 illegally. This put me out the running for the day so instead I decided to push the truck a bit harder. Picking some of the more difficult routes and unleashing the V6 a bit more, I had a great day and ended every section with a smile on my face. 3rd place was the final result for round 2.

So the next main event is a playday at Walters this Sunday. This should give a good test of the cooling system and a reasonable range test of the fuel system. Hopefully there will be a few of us there for a play
Next competition will be the next two national rounds at Corwen in North Wales on the next bank holiday weekend. After that though it's Driven to the Edge back at Walters Arena. For this I intend on fitting a mile marker to aid with the special stages. I've knocked up a winch cradle which fits into some mounts behind the panels. This is fully removable...
It's not sexy, but here is it...
