a bit of both to be honest.

the chassis is built to withstand certain stresses.

when you lift it 8-10 inches its not designed to take them stresses.

i know someone else and it happened to them in the same place.

+6"

at around 2 or 3" its fine.

mine had not a bit of rot, but it was a clean metal break.

where the steering assembly attaches to the right chassis leg.

but then +8 springs are not the norm.

speak to Dave at LLama 4x4 if you get an xj.

he`ll steer you right.

might want to head over to Jeepforum.com and Pirate4x4.com for info on Jeeps.

******** is a more local forum with good info too.

Plating an XJ is the way to go, just hit Google and you'll get loads of hits.

When there is no shortage of guys doing this kind of stuff in XJ's, there is also no shortage in good info & knowledge.

They do look impressive. Have looked through those other forums a few times - always end up jealous of the owners on Pirate4x4!!!

By the time an XJ is plated I'm thinking some of the weight advantage is lost.

Going back to original bit of thread my current thoughts are around:

Plan GVit
- I've just acquired a steel axle and set of front shafts (its like ive subconsciously started collecting bits for it!)
- Transferrable knowledge due to already having one and having played with a vitara
- Could turn into a lot of work, but potentially biggest gains over standard (=satisfaction?)
- Could end up with something quite unique out of this, and there's not a lot around running high level of modification

Plan Patrol Y60
- Could be a pain to find the right vehicle - but contributes to uniqueness factor
- Could be a pain to find parts - but on the other hand known to be tough
- Very capable out of the box
- Suspension and cage/body mods mostly but been reading on MWB conversions so does have "head room" for more work
- Some level of knowledge transfer as I've got some experience already owning one

Plan XJ
- Easier to source than the patrol ( possibly even than the Gvit I'd be after )
- Very capable out of the box
- Engine appeals to me Smile
- Did occur to me that I could get one of these as towing vehicle and start doing work to the patrol I've already got...if I get along with the auto it could be next project along...
- Any bought mods I think are going to be easier to source than the patrol. Thinking gearing, suspension, lockers etc.

Think I've written off idea of an SJ as I think for the effort involved I could probably do the work to the vitara. I do like them and if one crops up for the right price might have a go - but I don't really think I want to do one as a project.

I think it might come down to what base vehicle I can find at the time for what price and what distance.

Thanks a lot for all the input. I might try on the Shropshire Suzuki site to find out some more details on what folks have done with the Gvits. I was kind of hoping for someone to go - wouldn't recommend that because of blah or blah. But I'm not hearing that right now - on the Y60 or the Gvit... you know make it easy for me to eliminate one of them Wink

Not sure I follow. The diff and axle don't care where the steering wheel is.

the Kits are all For LHD

the LHD version doesnt cross the diff.

the RHD does.

none of the kits fit.

you cant bend the tubes around the diff as you are introducing a weak point.

ask me how i know.....

hmm, had a quick google. Kind of defeats part of my easier to source mods point under XJ's. Is it really none of the kits fit - all need modification for RHD? Or is it just the more extreme kits? You mentioned before you'd do a 2" lift and 31's before. Is the 2" bit of that because you can get away with just doing the springs/shocks?

Nice! Bit of a monster there. Who's the pet stalker though?

What are the chances... reading the "Epic Suspensions" this morning before leaving the house, "15 set-ups every off-roader can learn from" section of April 2015 Total Offroad pg 54-55 there's a section called "Want to push the limits? Be warned: they might push back...". An XJ pic there and then the name Ged is mentioned - and then comments around RHD vs LHD pretty much reflecting what you're saying here. Then I come on here and see your pics! Coincidence...

Anyways - looks like you've been there and got two magazine articles Wink

Who did the work on the suspension kit by the way? Mentions modifying the angles and then taking it for a spin in the article.

One of the articles I haven't yet read in the current TOR - 'cept I've just read Ged's bit now....

Some people think they know everything - others do it and know the answers

Ged... you've only got a couple of days to find a copy - the new issue will be on sale in a couple of days - having said that TOR now sell direct from their web site post free

yup, thats exactly what happened.

bits were chopped and welded, then we all took it out and had a wazz around to see how it worked.

with no offence to chicken drumstick, thats why i knew it wasnt as easy as he thought it would be.

been there, done that..

he is right, the axle and diff dont care where the steering wheel is. but the bits that join them together do.....

that was the one bit that was never perfect and the bit that killed the jeep in the end.

Alright folks. Finally moving house tomorrow! Whoop!!! So thought I'd give an update on where my thoughts have ended up 1 day away from having some room for project space Smile

I've been meddling with my patrol generally really enjoying the thing. Am in the process of putting up a bit of a thread on it. Haven't done anything serious to it... Think that's going to become my oversized laner for the time being.

So there's another thread on here in the Suzuki section about the arctic kit for vitaras... hoping to go see one at castle coombe this weekend (house moving permitting) but if I like it in real life I think that's enough to get my interested in my vitara again. Probably free's up the winch to be transferred to the patrol too. Thinking despite the mods on my vit I'd pull bits off of it rather than get a fresh donor vehicle... it's the devil you know type situation. If I go this route I think long term I could be looking at engine, axles etc...
