Evening all, after reading through the various posts in the search engine i am still undecided as to the right answers to my questions, so here's hoping for some help, tips and advise before i send my '98 Vitara in for winch battery upgrade.
Firstly i am looking to put a 2nd battery in rear depending on size will try and fit it in engine bay.
Question is how big a battery for occasional use on playdays, at the moment winch currently struggles on standard starting battery. Will a large 110-120amp leisure battery be sufficient? What size and length synthetic rope would be good enough?
Any pointers or links to a decent battery and winch rope would be appreciated, preferably that will deliver to Liverpool or local so i can collect, and not silly prices as Vit only costs me £1000. I was looking at the Optima Yellow Tops for around £125 would that be ok or overated by the name?
Thanks, Steve.

Firstly I would double check the winch wiring. Hoping I'm not teaching anyone to suck eggs here ...
* decent cables (eg 55mm2 welding cable) in good condition wired direct to the battery (with an isolator on the +ve)
* clean connectors
* good alternator
*good starter battery
Once you've got a know good point and you know the winch is getting everything the car can manage as standard you can then see if that is enough. The battery provides the reserve of power which is topped up by the alternator so a good alternator and one good [bigger] battery is better than a bank of batteries. Bear in mind that a mismatched pair of batteries will bring down both faster in the long term (a cheap split charge system will not help).
Synthetic rope: Plasma (www.ruftraks.co.uk) is the best out there. thickness and length is determined by your winch and car combo - ask Andy T, he'll help you out.
As for expense, a good, reliable winch system is not cheap but you should look at it as an investment which can outlast several cars so please don't relate it to the value of the car it is fitted to. Remember it is also a safety system and well as a very satisfying toy
