|
|
|
Just reading my new insurance terms and conditions and spotted this clause
Quote: | • Please ensure you take care of your keys – like all other insurers cover would not include vehicle theft should your keys be left in or on the vehicle, or theft by deception. Furthermore, and again in common with most other insurers, your policy does not cover the cost of replacement keys or locks if keys are lost or stolen. |
So, if you stop at a scene of an 'accident' and you hop out to help, make sure you take your keys because if it is a set up and they nick your car you're not covered!
Or be sure to say that you were forced to leave the vehicle

That's nothing new Richard. That or similar clauses have been in insurance policies for many years.

Probably, but I've not spotted it before.
This insurer is making everything very clear, something I like!

It's actually an offence in Northern Ireland to leave your car unsecured. Rarely enforced now but still an offence nonetheless.

Yeah. But they don't blow them up in glasgow.
Anything vaguely explosive gets drunk instead....

Is it true there was once an insurance exclusion about going to Liverpool.
I.E. If you go to Liverpool you're not covered for theft....

And Liverpool tried to give Clarkson a hard time about what he might have implied

nope, some people gave Clarkson a hard time because the local rag misrepresented what he actually said.
you know, responsible journalism
ps, the local rag is printed in..........

We used to have an ex sas soldier as a lorry driver who also drove for netto and carried a large machete. In certain areas they would pinch food out the back at traffic lights and stuff out his cab whilst unloading.
I believe if they take the keys from your house by walking through your unlocked front door and picking them up some will refuse to payout. :/

One of my friends, a lawyer, had both his and his wife's cars nicked that way. They left their keys in a bowl beside the door. Someone broke in that night, took the keys and went off with the cars.
Their car insurers refused to pay out on the basis that they had not taken sufficient steps to secure the keys so they claimed on the house insurance who refused on the grounds the cars were insured separately.
You can imagine that a lawyer would not put up with that for long but it took over 5 months to get it sorted and it took the Ombudsman and the commencement of legal action to get it sorted.
I know some people think we (on Difflock) are paranoid about insurance but given how ****** some insurers are its sensible to make sure you're on solid ground.

Out of interest what was the result of that in the end? Did they get the insurance pay out? I guess the argument was the keys were behind a locked door regardless of where they were in the house.
I think there is an element of "don't make it easy" for the thieves. A bowl by the door ain't so great in that sense... unless it's least hidden / non-obvious. I guess it starts getting a bit hard to quantify from a legal perspective what is "sufficient steps"... as given enough time and effort on the thieves behalf they'll find keys. I always think of leaving them by the door does leave you exposed in a similar way to leaving your keys in the ignition at the road side in the sense an opportunist might just pop their head through the door in case there's a quick and easy grab - unless you lock the door every time you go through it.
I was chatting with my friend about the security of my vehicles the other day and he pointed out it might take them a while to find one which starts and if they do it might be blocked in by one of the ones which doesn't start...

The cars were recovered with minor, but expensive damage. One was a big Merc and the thief abandoned it in a hawthorn hedge.
The insurers (different companies for each car but playing the same trick) paid out and although I don;t know the exact details I understand they agreed to cough up for all the repairs, car hire and legal fees - a nice trick for Johnny as he was the lawyer and it covered his time - but not for inconvenience and hassle.

match days, liverpool.
kids stopping people looking for parking spaces offering to "mind yer car mate"
give em a couple of quid, car gets looked after.
one smart ass replied to the kid "no need, i got a rotweiler".
the kid walked away and muttered "oh yeah. put fires out can he?"

Hi,
I ran out of petrol near RAF Weeton not a house in sight Walked back the following day, with a can. Unlocked door, put keys in ingition, walked round the back, removed filler cap, starter to pour ..... starter motor began to churn ...
I assume the tramp had come through a hedge. ??? Whatever, he had a fine pair of heels.
There was a feature on TV a few years ago. The "victim" agreed to go out for the evening, leaving usual security in place, reckoned the volunteer burglar wouldn't get in. It was a professional burglar, who was going straight, but willing to act the part for the evening.
He did get in, found the keys to the Land Rover, hooked up the horse box trailer .... and filled it with the contents of the house.

If someone wants it badly enough, they will take it.
Locks are there for the casual or opportunist thief only, the pro will know how to take it cleanly.

Some people I know leave the keys downstairs at night rather than by the bed so that if someone breaks in they take the car and don't come upstairs. I guess you could have a smashed up key safe in your house and just say they were in it?
Someone my dad worked with had his garage broken into one Christmas, they managed to start both cars, dumped them on the road and nicked the contents of the freezer
