|

I have 235 85 16 Insa Turbo Special Tracks fitted to my Disco. They have been fantastic and also have that 'look'.
I now need to replace them, but as I now do more laning than anything else my needs have changed - I want something less extreme, but I am also enough of a tart that the look of the tyre remains important too. Ground conditions locally are heavy clay.
What will satisfy my vanity, give good account for itself on the occasional pay & play day and have a light enough footprint for laning?

I have two sets of wheels for my off-roader - Insa special track for P&P and trials and BFG MTs for road and green laning

STT's are a bit mild if you want to off road IMO.
Recip Trails look nice and are available in a 235/85R16 and ride well on the road and work well off it too.
You might want to take a look at the Silverstone Sport MT-117 (not the extreme). This is not a remould, it looks way more aggressive than it is. But rides well on the road and still works well off it.
Of course you could go for a remould of the classic BFG MT (original pattern). Plenty to choose from. All work well off road, but more than fine on it.
Maxxis offer some nice MT's too. Again not a remould, so will generally run nicer on the road.
And the one I'd pick for general use the Federal Couragia MT.

I run BFG KM2's. On a couple of vehicles. Have been plenty good enough at P&P's and used plenty laning too. A friend using Special Tracks really notices road noise driving between lanes - whereas despite having stripped carpet and deadening out of my vit I don't really get any excessive noise. Once I did find I struggled to climb over a pretty small lip into a rutt on a fairly tight muddy track - where my friend with special tracks had no problem down to those big lugs on the edge of the tyre. That's the only time I've been disappointed in them but am okay with it as its horses for courses right...
I'm thinking about putting a set of Cooper STT's on at some point. I've read enough long (maybe pointless) threads where folks argue the toss between the KM2's and the STT's that I figure they're probably both pretty capable. As I'm a little bit "look" sensitive myself, and think I prefer how the STT's "look", I think next I'm going to give them a go.
Having said all that - I took my Y60 SWB Patrol to a P&P last weekend to see how it performs. It's still on the near end of life all terrains I bought it on (two of which are Maxxis). The P&P ain't that muddy but does have a few sloppy sections. Was really impressed how far you can go on just the all terrains (obviously they've got their limits). There was another chap there with a 110 on original BFG MT original and they were good too! So perhaps as chicken drumstick suggests something like the class BFG MT would be worth a go.
