As many of you will know I have been here a long time and had several vehicles, the longest was a Vit.
I sold up a few years ago due to the usual time and poverty that stops us all.
I am thinking of buying another 4x4, it will be used to teach my 15 year old to drive.
It must have power steering and ideally hard top
Budget would be less than £1000 but nearer £600, so what would you buy and why?
I also have to consider were to store it

Frontera? Pretty cheap and not bad for rot. Quite tough too. zooks are cheap and simple to repair.

I would steer clear of anything thats going cheap thats usually a lot more because its probably knackered. Don't punch above your budget if you know what I mean.

A quick search on autotrader shows-up the most popular in that bracket as:

Toyota RAV4
LR Freeloader
Grand Vitara
Frontera

All depends on what you want to do with it otherwise I guess. With a limited budget I guess you want reliability and cheap parts together.......

Vitara then?

Insurance wise some jap 4x4's (on some models) are higher insurance brackets compared to say a frontera.

If you're looking for something bigger & reliable - I'd recommend a Terrano.

Not particularly easy to mod, but built like a tank Wink

Is this to be a daily drive/road car for yourself? If your kid is only 15 it'll be 2 years before they'll on tarmac so the fuel costs are irrelevant.

Any small 4x4 going for £600 is likely to be one step away from the scrapyards/parts bin so bear in mind (as if I need to remind you) the cost of keeping it on the road if that's where its going to be used

In that case, if its not going on the road, then pretty much anything you can get for £600 that still runs and stops!

Peoples thoughts on the following please and any issues I should know about?
Shogun?
Teranno
Maverick
I still feel a Vit as its so capable, but I miss my Disco and it would look better and plenty of bits.
I can insure a Disco for £175 Vit is £150, but I would have to mod them so what should I pay for a a second hand set of tyres Insa Turbo etc
I think the budget may get to £1000 if I can sell my caravan

Go for the Pajero rather than the Shogun year for year it won't be so rusty - mine is just showing surface rust at 20 years old - I've seen younger Shoguns rotted out

Again go for the Teranno over the Maverick - Ford put extras in on top of the Nissan stuff - immobilisation for a start - if it goes wrong Ford says it's a Nissan repair and Nissan tells you it's Ford responsibility Rolling Eyes Either way the teranno/maverick rots faster than a Landrover apparently.

Personally with what you've said you want it for I'd go for the Vit

the fitted conversions run at about a grand...

or you and the lad can do it for about £70......

you need....

1 fuel tank. i use a 22L boat tank. cost me a tenner.
loads of fuel hose.
a heat exchanger, cost between £10 and £70 depending on type.
one or two changeover valves, depending on purge preferences.between£2.50 and £40 depending on type.

loads of jubilee clips.

and some veg oil......i may have a few litres somewhere in the shed.
