|
|
|
Hi,
I am putting together a hybrid based on a RRC chassis and running gear with a space frame body - it shouldn't weigh more than 2 tonnes.
What I am after is views on what size wheel and tyre combinations would be best. There is no issue with spacers/hub converters so it's purely down to price vs availablity vs choice.
The car will probably do no more than 120.
Looking for 2 sets of wheels/tyres on for road and one for off road.
I currently run a D2 on 255/55/18s and a D3 on 255/60/18s. I have no preference in size other than I don't want to pay an arm and a leg and there needs to be a nice selection available.
I look forward to your responses.

Depends what your going to drive on but for play days / trials etc 265 insa turbo special tracks are easy to get, cheap and effective. Any bigger with this sort of tread and your really going to have to drive to the strength of the axle and carry spare parts or go for a less aggressive tread.. which might suit the terrain anyway depending what your doing?
By road use do you mean road use only or laning? I would look for an AT slightly smaller than above. Coopers or BFGs?

off road will be laning and the odd pay and play as it will be a daily driver and i can't break it too often. so was thinking ATs rather than MTs
on road will be 95% Road so not ATs.

In that case I'd run AT tyres all the time. Don't have much experience with this type of tyre but I've been recommended cooper AT3 and general grabber at.

we've got GG ATs on our D3, they don't offer as much grip on the road as I would like.
I have no problem with 2 sets of tyres...

I don't know how much road grip you expect from a AT.A company i have dealt with use 245/70-17 MT's on there D3's, they are more than happy with both how much grip they offer wet or dry and how long they last mileage wise.Cooper AT3 in 265/60R18 would be one of my choices or Conti Cross Contact AT in 255/60R18 would be another.

we were going round a roundabout and they were 'squealing' a little bit.. wasn't going as quick as i would in the D2 but that has ace and doesn't lean as much and doesn't weigh as much and has 1/3 the power...

I'm not sure there are many tyres that'll hold a 2 tonne truck on a roundabout at 120...
I've had BFG ATs on my 2.5 tonne truck for the last 4 years (the same ones) no problem driving on or off roads - sure they might squeal a little sometimes but they don't drift...

the ATs aren't a performance tyre though, so as looking for something a little(lot) more road biased..

DMack do a track day tyre that is very road biased, then there are all tyre manufacturers who do road biased 4x4 tyres.Just type a make in and away you go.As for size it depends 16,17,18,19,20, or 22 inch rims and tyres are available.

You want a road performance tyre on a hybrid spaceframe offroad range rover classic because the at tyres don't perform well enough at the speeds you want to drive?
I think you and I have different objectives for our offroad range rovers, 30 mph in a straight line is petrifying in mine
The pickup is on Bridgestone duller ht and it's very difficult to get the back end out. Done 70k on them and still have 3 mm tread.
Let us know what you end up with

If you're open to two sets, I'd go for a set of either 235/85/16 or 255/85/16 bf goodrich km2's for the mud set.
I've used them and was gobsmacked they don't look aggressive but they give great grip!
I'm not sure on road tyres but I'd probably look into the bf goodrich in, personally, a 16 but if you want bigger then I guess that's down to you.
What kind of hybrid is it going to be? Series 1/2/3 on a rangerover p38 or classic chassis?

A thought concerning wheels.16 inch D2 rims come in 7 and 8 inch widths the 8 inch will limit you to what size of tyre you can put on. D2 18 inch rims come only in 8 inch widths.
