Hi all,
I've got a late model 300tdi engine which doesn't seem to run properly at higher revs. It starts fine, and is Ok lower down, but pulling hard, such as uphill or towing, I can feel it surging and then holding back.
Overtaking is a nightmare, since I'm never sure whether its going to make it past!
Plenty of diesel in the tank, the fuel filter is about 2 months/2500 miles old.
Injector fault? it was out of a fire damaged disco, and the wiring got burnt to the old injector pump and no1 injector, so they're all changed for earlier model stuff, no electrics etc.
Only other thing is its using a little bit of water, no obvious leaks, no water in oil/oil in water etc
Head gasket?
All ideas gratefully received
cheers

I would start by fitting a new lift pump and see if It's any better, they are not expensive and easy enough to change. If that doesn't work, I would maybe get a diesel specialist to look at it and diagnose the possible fault/s then fix it yourself if you can.

A hg issue won't just make it run bad at high revs.
Sorry to say you need to do some investigating as it could be so many different things.
Lack of air, or fuel or both could be the cause. Are you losing boost pressure? Is the turbo boosting? Are any intake hoses collapsing under boost? Collapsed silencer in the exhaust?

I had exactly this on the Team Chaos Discovery and it was the injector pump.
changed that and runs perfectly now.
